How do I install the Sonance VP89R speaker?

Cut a hole using the template, run speaker wires, retract RotoLock clamps, insert speaker, and tighten the four screws on the baffle until resistance is felt. The FastMount tabs hold the speaker during installation. See the manual for detailed steps.

What are the cut-out dimensions for the VP89R?

For round models: 10-1/8" (257mm) diameter. For square models: 10-1/4" x 10-1/4" (260mm x 260mm). Mounting depth is 5-7/8" (149mm).

Can I paint the grilles?

Yes, the grilles are paintable. Refer to the included Painting Instructions sheet for proper painting procedures.

How do I adjust the pivoting drivers?

Apply light pressure to the outer ring of the midrange/tweeter or to the tweeter support bracket edge to pivot. Do not touch the cone itself. Aim drivers toward the listening area for stereo or front channels, or toward walls for surround.

What do the tweeter and midrange level switches do?

They allow boosting or cutting the output of those drivers by 3dB each, to tailor sound to room acoustics or personal preference.

What is the warranty on the VP89R?

Sonance offers a limited lifetime warranty on the speaker (except grille, which is 5 years). It covers defective workmanship and materials for the original purchaser. Contact your dealer or Sonance for service.

How do I connect speaker wires?

Strip 1/4" to 1/2" (6-12mm) of insulation, press down the spring-loaded post, insert wire, and release. Ensure positive (red dot) connects to amplifier + and negative (black dot) to -.

What ceiling thickness can the RotoLock system handle?

The RotoLock clamps can accommodate ceiling material up to 1-1/4" (32mm) thick.

Can these speakers be used for home theater?

Yes, they are suitable for left, center, right, and surround channels in 5.1 or 7.1 systems. Follow the placement guidelines in the manual for optimal sound.

Are the FastMount tabs reusable?

No, they are for one-time use only. If the speaker is removed, the tabs disconnect and remain inside the ceiling.

Speaker Placement

Distributed Audio Placement (Mono signal)

All Sonance Visual Performance Series in-ceiling speaker models provide excellent coverage in distributed audio systems from a wide variety of installation locations.

The table and illustration in Figure 1 show how far apart the speakers can be placed at various ceiling heights while still providing good coverage for all listeners.

Home Theater Speaker Placement

Left, Center & Right Speakers (see Figure 2)

• Place the left, center and right speakers 1 – 2 feet (0.3m – 0.6m) in front of the video screen, 6 – 10 feet (1.8m – 3m) apart, with the center channel speaker as close to midway between the left and right speakers as possible.
• The main listening position should be 4 - 10 feet (1.2m - 2m) away from the speakers.

Surround Speakers — 5.1-Channel System (see Figure 2)

- Locate the left and right surround speakers 2 - 6 feet (0.6m - 1.8m) behind the listening position. The speakers should be 6 - 10 feet (1.8m - 3m) apart.

Surround Speakers — 7.1-Channel System (see Figure 3)

• Left & Right Surround Speakers: Place the left and right surround speakers directly to the sides of the listening position, 6 -10 feet (1.8m - 3m) apart.
• Surround Back Speakers: Place the surround back speakers 2 - 6 feet (0.6m - 1.8m) behind the listening position. The surround back speakers should be closer together than the left and right surround speakers, 3 - 6 feet (0.9m - 1.8m) apart.

Stereo Placement (2-Channel)

• Place the left and right speakers anywhere from 6 feet to 10 feet apart, with the main listening position as close to midway between the speakers as possible.
• In most cases pivoting the woofer and/or midrange/tweeter assembly of each speaker directly towards the main listening position will help maximize the stereo soundstage.

Use the Left and Right speaker placement in Figures 2 and 3, on page 1, as a guide.

Before Installation

1. Determine the location for the speaker (see Speaker Placement on page 1).
2. Perform an obstruction survey to be certain that there are no studs, conduit, pipes, heating ducts, pocket doors or air returns in the ceiling cavity that will interfere with the speaker.
3. Mounting space requirements:

- Large round speakers: 10/8'' (257mm) diameter cut-out; 5^7/8'' (149mm) mounting depth.

- Large square speakers: 10^1/4 x 10^1/4 (260mm x 260mm) cut-out; 5^7/8 (149mm) mounting depth.

1. Position the included cut-out template where the speaker is to be located and pencil an outline on the ceiling. If you are unsure about obstructions, drill a small hole in the center of the outline and insert a coat hanger wire into the hole to feel-around for possible obstructions.
2. Cut the mounting hole using a keyhole or drywall saw, and run the speaker wires from the mounting hole to the amplifier location.

NOTE: CONSULT LOCAL BUILDING CODES BEFORE RUNNING SPEAKER WIRES THROUGH CEILINGS.

Installation

Sonance Visual Performance Series speakers feature exclusive FastMount tabs and an integral Roto-Lock ^® mounting system for quick mounting directly into existing ceilings.

WARNING: THE EDGES OF THE FASTMOUNT TABS ARE VERY SHARP. USE CAUTION WHEN HANDLING THE SPEAKER.

1. Remove the paint plug from the speaker.
2. Strip 14 " - 12 " (6mm - 12mm) of insulation from each speaker lead. Twist the strands or tin the exposed wire with solder to ensure that there are no stray strands. (Stray strands that touch each other can cause a short-circuit that can damage the amplifier.)
3. The speaker's connector posts are spring-loaded. Push the top of each connector post down to open the connector and insert the exposed wires into the holes in the posts.

The speaker's positive post is labeled with a red dot; the negative post is labeled with a black dot. Double-check that you connected amplifier "+" to speaker "+" and amplifier "-" to speaker "-"

1. Make sure all the RotoLock clamps are retracted so that they are tucked within the mounting hole's border. Insert the speaker into the hole in the ceiling (Figure 4). The RotoLock system can accommodate a maximum ceiling material thickness of 1 14 (32mm).

The FastMount tabs will prevent the speaker from falling out of the mounting hole, allowing you to let go of the speaker to pick-up tools or other items (Figure 5).

NOTE: THE FASTMOUNT TABS ARE DESIGNED FOR ONE-TIME USE ONLY. IF THE SPEAKER IS REMOVED FROM THE MOUNTING HOLE THE FASTMOUNT TABS WILL DISCONNECT AND REMAIN INSIDE THE CEILING.

1. Tighten the four screws on the front of the speaker baffle. The Roto-Lock clamps will automatically rotate into position and begin clamping the speaker (Figure 6).

When you notice resistance on the screws the speaker has been clamped successfully.

IMPORTANT: Always use low-torque settings; NEVER over-tighten.

NOTE: ADJUST THE TENSION OF THE ROTO-LOCK CLAMPS SO THAT THE SPEAKER FRAME IS FLAT. THIS WILL HELP ENSURE THAT THE GRILLE CONTACTS THE CEILING ALL THE WAY AROUND THE SPEAKER FOR A PROPER FIT.

SONANCE VISUAL PERFORMANCE® LARGE ROUND AND SQUARE

1. The new micro-trim grille is held in place by several small, powerful magnets on the speaker frame. Place the grille against the speaker and the magnets will hold it firmly in place. When properly installed, the grille trim should make contact with the wall all the way around the speaker.

Speaker Adjustments

Pivoting Woofer and Midrange/Tweeter

Some Visual Performance Series Large round and square speakers have a pivoting woofer and a pivoting midrange/tweeter assembly. If you're using the speakers in stereo or as the front left/center/right speakers in a home theater, pivot the drivers directly towards the listening area. If you're using the speakers as surround channel speakers in a home theater, pivot the drivers towards a wall or window, away from the listeners.

To pivot the midrange/tweeter assembly, apply light pressure to the ring around the outside edge of the midrange cone, as shown in Figure 7. Take care not to touch or apply pressure to the midrange cone itself. To Pivot the woofer, apply pressure on the outer edge of one of the tweeter support brackets, as shown in Figure 7. Do not touch or apply pressure to the woofer cone.

Tweeter and Midrange Level Switches

VP89 and VP87 speakers have midrange and tweeter level switches (see Figure 8) that boost or cut those drivers' levels by 3dB. This lets you tailor the speaker's performance to better match the room's acoustics or the listener's preferences.

LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY

Sonance warrants to the first end-user purchaser that this Sonance-brand product ("Product"), when purchased from an authorized Sonance Dealer/Distributor, will be free from defective workmanship and materials for the life of the Product, except for the grille, which is warranted for five (5) years. Sonance will at its option and expense either repair the defect or replace the Product with a new or remanufactured Product or a reasonable equivalent.
