What type of drives can I use in the Silverstone RS831S?

You can use any standard 3.5-inch SATA HDD or SSD. The trays support both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drives with optional screws.

Does the RS831S come with a power supply?

No, the power supply is not included. You need to install a standard ATX power supply (recommended 500W or higher for 8 drives).

How do I connect the RS831S to my computer?

The enclosure does not include a controller. You need a RAID card or HBA with an SFF-8087 connector (or use the included backplane). The backplane connects to your controller via a single SFF-8087 internal cable.

What is the maximum capacity per drive?

The RS831S supports any SATA drive up to the current maximum capacity (e.g., 20TB or higher). There is no firmware limitation.

Can I use this enclosure in a desktop setup?

Yes, it can be used as a tower with the included feet, but it is designed for 3U rackmount. The feet are optional.

How do I replace a fan?

Remove the rear panel (screws). The fans are standard 120mm and connected to the backplane or a separate header. Simply unplug and unscrew the fan housing.

Is hot-swap supported?

Yes, the drive trays are hot-swappable as long as your controller supports hot-swap (most RAID cards do). The backplane provides power and data.

What RAID levels can I use?

The enclosure itself does not implement RAID. The RAID level depends on your controller or software (e.g., hardware RAID card, ZFS, mdadm).

How do I clean the dust filter?

The front bezel has a removable dust filter. Gently pull it out, rinse with water, let dry completely, and reinsert.

Does the RS831S have a warranty?

Silverstone typically offers a 1-year warranty on enclosures. Check with your retailer for exact terms.

Open the door and release the latch. The HDD will pop out slightly then pull the HDD out gently with your hands.

1. Product component defects or damages resulted from defective production is covered under warranty.
   Defects or damages with the following conditions will be fixed or replaced under SilverStone Technology's jurisdiction.
   a) Usage in accordance with instructions provided in this manual, with no misuse, overuse, or other inappropriate actions.
   b) Damage not caused by natural disaster (thunder, fire, earthquake, flood, salt, wind, insect, animals, etc...)
   c) Product is not disassembled, modified, or fixed. Components not disassembled or replaced.
   d) Warranty mark/stickers are not removed or broken.
   Loss or damages resulted from conditions other than ones listed above are not covered under warranty.
2. Under warranty, SilverStone Technology's maximum liability is limited to the current market value for the product (depreciated value, excluding shipping, handling, and other fees). SilverStone Technology is not responsible for other damages or loss associated with the use of product.
3. Under warranty, SilverStone Technology is obligated to repair or replace its defective products. Under no circumstances will SilverStone Technology be liable for damages in connection with the sale, purchase, or use including but not limited to loss of data, loss of business, loss of profits, loss of use of the product or incidental or consequential damage whether or not foreseeable and whether or not based on breach of warranty, contract or negligence, even if SilverStone Technology has been advised of the possibility of such damages.
4. Warranty covers only the original purchaser through authorized SilverStone distributors and resellers and is not transferable to a second hand purchaser.
