Using Your Phone With a Hearing Aid Device

A number of Sprint phones have been tested for hearing aid device compatibility, When some wireless phones are used with certain hearing devices (including hearing aids and cochlear implants), users may detect a noise which can interfere with the effectiveness of the hearing device.

æ | & M350.book Page 159 Thursday, March 25, 2010 3:43 PM Some hearing devices are more immune than others lo this interference noise, and phones also vary in the amount of interference noise they may generate. ANSI standard C63.19 was developed to provide a standardized means of measuring both wireless phone and hearing devices to determine usability rating categories for both.

Raïings have been developed for mobile phones to assist hearing device users find phones that may be compatible with their hearing device. Not all phones have been rated for compatibiliy with hearing devices. Phones that have been rated have a label located on the box. Your SPH-M350 has an M4 rating.

These ratings are not guarantees. Results wi vary depending on the users hearing device and individual type and degree of hearing loss. I a hearing device is particularly vulnerable to interference noise: even a phone with a higher rating may still cause unacceplable noise levels in the hearing device. Trying out the phone with your hearing device is the best way to evaluate it for your personal needs.

M-Ratings: Phones rated M3 or M4 meet FCC requirements for hearing aid compatibilty and are likely to generale less interference to hearing devices than unrated phones. (MA is the better/higher of the two ratings.)

T-Ratings: Phones rated T3 or T4 meet FCC requirements and are likely to be more usable with a hearing devices telecoil ("T. Switch"or “Telephone Switch") than unrated phones. (TA is ie

better/higher of the two ratings. Nole that not all hearing devices have telecoils in them)

Note: New Technologies, Including Wi-Fi ‘This phone has been tested and raled for use with hearing aids for some of he wireless technologies that i uses, However, there may be newer wireless technologies (including Wi-Fi) {used in this phone that have not been tested for use with heating aids.

Hearing aid devices may also be measured for immunity to interference noise from wireless phones and should have ratings similar to phones. Ask your hearing healihcare professional for the rating of your hearing aid. Add he rating of your hearing aid and your phone to determine probable usabilt e Any combined raïing equal to or greater than six offers excellent use. e Any combined rafing equal to five is considered normal use. © Any combined rating equal to four is considered usable. Thus, if you pair an M3 hearing aid with an M3 phone, you will have a combined rating of six for “excellent use." This is synonymous for T ratings. Sprint further suggests you experiment with muliple phones {even those not labeled M3/T3 or M4/T4) while in the store to find the one that works best wilh your hearing aid device. Should you experience interlerence or find the quality of service unsatisfactory alter purchasing your phone, promptiy return it to the store within 30 days of purchase. (A restocking

Radio Frequency (RF) Energy

Understanding How Your Phone Operates Your phone is basically a radio transmitter and receiver. When its tumed on, it receives and transmits radio frequency (RF) Signals. Wen you use your phone, the system handling your call controls ihe power level. This power can range from 0.006 watt to 0.2 wait in digital mode.

Knowing Radio Frequency Safety

The design of your phone complies with updated NCRP standards described below.

In 1991-92, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (EEE) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) joined in updating ANS's 1982 standard for safety levels with respect to human exposure to RF signals. More than 120 scientists, engineers and physicians from universities, goverment health agencies and industries developed this

updated standard after reviewing ihe available body of research. In 1998, the Federal Communications Commission {FCC) adopied this updated standard in a regulation. In August 1996, the FCC adopted hybrid standard consisting of the existing ANSVIEEE standard and the guidelines published by the National Council of Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP).

To maintain compliance wih FCC RF exposure guidelines, if You wear a handsel on your body, use a Sprint-Supplied or Sprint-approved carrying case, holster or olher body-worn accessory. I you do not use a body-wom accessory, ensure the antenna is at least 7/16 inch (1.5 centimeters) from your body when transmitting. Use of non-Sprint-approved accessories may violate FCC RF exposure guidelines.

For more information about RF exposure, visit the FCC website at wmwfcc.gov,

Specific Absorption Rates (SAR) for Wireless Phones

The SAR value corresponds to lhe relative amount of RF energy absorbed into {he head of a user of a wireless handset. The SAR value of a phone is the result of an extensive testing, measuring and calculation process. lt does not represent how much RF lhe phone emits. All phone models are tested at their highest value in strict laboratory settings. But when in operation, the SAR of a phone can be substantial} less than

the level reported to the FCC. This is because of a variety of factors including ils proximity to a base station antenna, phone design and other factors. What is important to remember is that each phone meets strict federal guidelines. Variations in SARS do not represent a variation in safety.

All phones must meet the federal standard, which incorporates a substantial margin of salety. As stated above, variations in SAR values belween different model phones do not mean variations in safety, SAR values at or below the federal standard of 1.6 W/kg are considered safe for use by the public.

The highest reported SAR values of the SPH-M350 are:

Cellular CDMA mode (Part 22): Head: 0.68 W/kg: Body-worn: 1.15 \W/kg

PCS mode (Part 24): Head: 1.08 W/kg; Body-worn: 1.31 W/kg FCC Radio Frequency Emission
