Frequently Asked Questions - CA-MICROUSB-001 COBRA

What is the Cobra CA-MICROUSB-001?
The Cobra CA-MICROUSB-001 is a Vehicle Hardwire Kit that allows you to connect your Micro USB powered device (such as a radar detector or dash cam) directly to your vehicle's fuse box, eliminating the need for a cigarette lighter adapter.
Can I use this hardwire kit with any Micro USB device?
Yes, this kit is designed to work with any Micro USB powered device. However, it is specifically tested and recommended for Cobra radar detectors and dash cams.
Does the hardwire kit come with a fuse?
Yes, the kit includes a blade fuse (typically 2A). You will need to select a suitable fuse slot in your vehicle's fuse box and install the fuse with the wire wrapped around its prong.
Can I install this hardwire kit myself?
If you have basic automotive electrical knowledge, you can install it yourself. However, Cobra recommends professional installation to avoid damage to your vehicle or device. Always disconnect the battery before working on your vehicle's electrical system.
What is the difference between switched and unswitched fuses?
A switched fuse only provides power when the vehicle ignition is on (e.g., for a radar detector that should turn off with the car). An unswitched fuse provides constant power (e.g., for a dash cam with parking mode). Choose based on your device's needs.
How do I find the ground point for the black wire?
Look for a metal bolt or nut connected to the vehicle's chassis near the fuse box. This provides a good ground. Loosen the nut, wrap the exposed copper of the black wire around it, and tighten securely.
Is the hardwire kit safe for all vehicles?
Yes, it is designed for 12V DC electrical systems found in most cars, trucks, and SUVs. However, always check your vehicle's manual and consult a professional if unsure.
Can I use this kit under the hood?
No. The DC Converter Box is not designed for the harsh environment under the hood. It must be installed inside the cabin (e.g., near the fuse box or behind the dashboard).
What should I do if my device doesn't power on?
First, verify the fuse is installed correctly and not blown. Check that the ground connection is secure. Use a multimeter to confirm power at the output. If still not working, contact Cobra support.
Does this product comply with FCC regulations?
Yes, the Cobra CA-MICROUSB-001 complies with FCC Part 15 and Industry Canada RSS-310. It is designed to not cause harmful interference.

HARDWIRE KIT INSTALLATION GUIDE

WARNING: Cobra is not responsible for damages to the vehicle or any connected products or accessories. Working with your vehicle's power system can be dangerous to both you and your vehicle. Cobra recommends professional automotive installation to avoid damage.

This Vehicle Hardwire Kit connects your Micro USB powered device directly to your fuse box, freeing up your cigarette lighter adapter and eliminating clutter on your dash board. This Hardwire Kit should work with any Micro USB powered device, but is designed and tested specifically for Micro USB powered Radar Detectors and Dash Cams from Cobra.

Note: Fuse box locations, fuse types, and interior designs vary greatly by vehicle. This guide is intended to outline basic steps for installation but the process may differ depending on your car's make and model.

Installation Instructions:

  1. Position your device in its desired location on the windshield, ensuring that it does not obstruct your view of the road ahead.

Consult your vehicle's manual to locate your fuse panel. Run the hardwire kit from your device, up and around the windshield, and to your fuse box. Generally you'll want to position the hardwire kit so that excess cable can be coiled near the fuse box side.

Note: The DC Converter Box is not designed to withstand the harsh environment under the hood of your vehicle and should not be installed there.

  1. You need to decide whether you want your device wired to a switched or un-switched fuse. Switched circuits only have power when the vehicle is ON. Un-switched circuits always have power.

Make sure your vehicle is off and the key is not in the ignition. Choose your desired fuse. You can verify if it's switched or un-switched using a simple circuit tester. Pull the fuse, wrap exposed copper part of the red (+) wire around the fuse tooth, and re-insert the fuse.

  1. Locate a ground point near the fuse box. There is usually either an obviously labeled ground point or a nut/bolt that connects directly into the car frame. Loosen the nut, wrap the exposed copper part of the black (-) wire around the bolt, and tighten the nut.

Now you can test to make sure the connections have been made properly. Plug your device into the hardwire kit and ensure that it powers up and shuts down according to your expectations. If so, you are ready to clean up your installation. Cover any exposed copper with electrical tape, secure excess wire using zip ties, and tuck away all visible wire inside the headliner.
