Frequently Asked Questions - TS-1002 Brentwood

How do I use the TS-1002 knife sharpener?
Hold the sharpener firmly on a flat surface. Insert the knife blade into the coarse slot (Stage 1) and pull through gently 3-5 times. Then repeat in the fine slot (Stage 2) for a polished edge. Always pull toward you, away from the blade edge.
What is the sharpening angle of this sharpener?
The sharpener has pre-set angles. The coarse stage sharpens at approximately 20 degrees per side, and the fine stage hones at a similar angle, resulting in a total included angle of about 40 degrees. This is suitable for most Western-style kitchen knives.
Can I sharpen serrated or ceramic knives?
No, this sharpener is designed for straight-edge, non-serrated steel knives. Do not use on ceramic blades or serrated knives as it may damage the sharpener or the blade.
How many times can I sharpen a knife before replacing the rods?
The tungsten carbide or ceramic rods are durable. With regular home use, they can last for several months to a year depending on frequency. When you notice reduced sharpening effectiveness, it's time to replace the rods.
How do I clean the sharpener?
After use, wipe the exterior with a damp cloth. To remove metal filings, use a soft brush (like a toothbrush) to gently sweep debris from the slots. Do not submerge the sharpener in water or use abrasive cleaners.
Is the sharpener safe to use?
Yes, the TS-1002 includes a built-in finger guard to protect your hand. Always place the sharpener on a non-slip surface and use a stable grip. Keep fingers away from the blade path.
Does it work on both left-handed and right-handed knives?
Yes, the sharpener is ambidextrous. The pull-through design accommodates both left-handed and right-handed users without adjustment.
What type of knives can I sharpen?
It is suitable for straight-edge kitchen knives such as chef's knives, paring knives, and utility knives. Not recommended for scissors, gardening tools, or blades over 8 inches long.
Why does my knife not get sharp after several pulls?
Ensure you are applying gentle, even pressure and pulling the knife straight through without twisting. The knife may need more passes (up to 10) if very dull. Also check that the rods are not worn out; replace if necessary.
Can I replace the sharpening rods myself?
Yes, replacement rods are available for purchase. Refer to the manual for instructions on how to remove old rods and install new ones. Typically, rods snap into place with a gentle push.

Course Side first, followed by Fine Side.

Course side reshapes a blades edge while the Fine side polishes it.

  1. Start by passing the knife's edge through the bottom and top 'Right Slots on the 'Course' side, 5 times each.

  2. Next, pass the knife's edge through the Left and Right Slots of the 'Fine' side, 5 times each.

  3. Wash the knife with warm and soapy water.

  4. Dry the knife and it is now ready to use.

  5. Unplug your appliance from the outlet and use the retractable power cord button to quickly store away.

COARSE SLOTS

Step 1 – Precision Grinding

- This begins the sharpening process and creates a precision angled edge.

- Slowly draw the knife towards you through the bottom and top blade guide slots in Stage 1, five times alternating passes between the two slots. The knife's cutting edge should be kept parallel with the table or countertop except when sharpening the tip of the blade.

- To sharpen the tip, lift on the knife handle slightly as the curved portion of the blade is drawn through the blade guides.

- When drawing the knife through the blade guides, allow approximately one second for each two inches of blade.

Example: If sharpening a knife with a 6-inch blade, you should take approximately three seconds for each pass.

FINE SLOTS

Step 2 - Fine Honing the Blade

- This completes the knife sharpening process by honing and polishing the knife to an exact razor-sharp edge.

- Slowly draw the knife through both blade guide slots in Stage 2, five times, alternating passes between the two slots. Each pass should take

approximately three or more seconds, again depending on the knife blade's length.

- Complete the honing process with one quick pass (approximately one second) through both slots of Stage 2.

Note: If the knife does not slice food with ease, repeat Steps 1 and 2.

CAUTION: Do not attempt to sharpen serrated electric knives, or any blade that does not fit freely in the blade guides.

Sharpening Scissors:

- Open the scissors holding one side and insert the blade of the scissors into the sharpening groove, with the angled side facing downwards.

- Slowly draw the knife towards you through the blade guide three times.
