Frequently Asked Questions - Perk Capresso

How do I use the Capresso Perk for the first time?
Before first use, wash all removable parts (lid, coffee basket, basket lid, tube) in hot soapy water or on the top rack of the dishwasher. Do not immerse the body or cord. Then assemble and run a cycle with water only to remove any residue.
What type of coffee grind should I use?
Use a coarse grind specifically for percolators. Fine or medium grind may sift through the basket holes and leave sediment in your cup. If grinding your own beans, set the grinder to a coarse setting.
Why is my coffee weak?
Weak coffee can result from using too little coffee or too much water. Fill the coffee basket to the maximum 12-cup mark and reduce water to 4-6 cups. Also ensure you use cold water; warm water prevents proper percolation.
How do I keep coffee grounds from getting into my cup?
Use a coarse grind and wet the inside of the coffee basket before adding grounds to seal the holes. Do not overfill the basket. You can also use a paper filter designed for percolators.
How do I clean the percolator?
After cooling, unplug and disassemble. Wash the lid, basket, basket lid, and tube in hot soapy water (top rack dishwasher safe). Clean the body interior with a soft sponge and soapy water; rinse thoroughly. Never immerse the body or cord in water.
How often should I descale the Capresso Perk?
Descale every 2-4 months, depending on water hardness. Use 1 oz (28 g) of descaling agent dissolved in 6 cups (32 oz) of water. Run the mixture through the percolator, let sit 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
Can I use the percolator to make hot water for tea or cocoa?
Yes. Fill with cold water to desired level, assemble the tube and coffee basket (lid on basket), and plug in. The water is hot when the indicator light comes on. Unplug and serve. Be cautious of hot surfaces.
What safety precautions should I follow?
Always operate on a flat, stable surface. Use only the handle when the percolator is hot. Never open the lid during brewing. Keep cord away from hot surfaces. Ensure lid is locked before use. Unplug when not in use.
What is covered under the one-year warranty?
The warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship for one year from purchase. It does not cover glass breakage, damage from misuse, commercial use, or unauthorized repairs. Register at www.capresso.com for warranty service.

Before First Use

Check that all printed materials and packing materials are removed from the machine prior to use. Wash all parts according to the steps in "Cleaning & Maintenance" to remove any dust or residue prior to making coffee.

Making Coffee

Percolators produce very hot water. If you follow the sequence as described below you will avoid possible accidents which might cause severe injuries and burns.

  1. Plug cord into the percolator base (Fig. 4).
  2. Remove lid (Fig. 6), coffee basket, coffee basket lid and tube.
  3. Fill the body of the Capresso Perk with cold water to the desired cup level as indicated on the inside of the percolator (Fig. 2).
CAUTION: Never operate the percolator without water inside as this could damage the machine.

  4. Wet the interior of the coffee basket to keep small coffee grounds from sifting through the bottom of the basket. Place coffee basket on tube. Hold the top of the tube and place tube and coffee basket into the heating well (Fig. 5). IF THE TUBE IS NOT SEATED PROPERLY IN THE HEATING WELL, THE PERCOLATOR WILL NOT PERK.

  5. Add coarsely ground coffee into the basket to the desired cup level marking (Fig. 3). Avoid using finely ground coffee as this could sift through the holes. Avoid getting coffee grounds into the tube by placing your finger over the tube opening while adding ground coffee. Refer to the “Coffee Making Chart” that follows for adding the right amount of coffee. Spread coffee evenly in basket. Place coffee basket lid on top of the coffee basket.

Note: The coffee basket includes cup marking for up to 12 cups. For extra strong flavor it is recommended to fill the basket up to the 12 cup marking line (Fig. 3) with ground coffee, while filling the body of the Capresso Perk with cold water to the desired cup level as indicated on the inside of the percolator (Fig. 2). NEVER fill water past the 8 cup marking line!

  1. Place lid onto percolator body using the markings to help lock in place. (Fig. 6) Scalding may occur if the lid is removed during the brewing cycle!

  2. Ensure the cord is plugged into the percolator; then plug the cord into an electrical outlet. The unit automatically turns on and will begin to heat.

  3. Once the brewing cycle is complete the indicator light will illuminate and the machine will switch automatically to the keep warm function. Allow about 1 minute per cup for brewing time.

CAUTION: Body of percolator will get very hot during brewing. Always use the handle (Fig. 1, I) when touching the percolator after brewing. Always wait until the percolator has cooled down sufficiently before attempting to empty the grounds from the coffee basket.

  1. The percolator will remain at serving temperature until it is unplugged.

  2. Remove plug from percolator for serving.

  3. When finished serving coffee, the plug can be replaced to keep coffee hot. Always keep the appliance unplugged when not in use.

CAUTION: Do not touch the stainless steel or glass parts of the percolator until the machine has completely cooled down. The stainless steel and glass parts will be extremely hot after brewing, always use caution when handling the hot percolator. Only use the handle (Fig. 1, I) when touching the hot percolator.

NOTE: We recommend using coffee that has been ground specifically for use in a percolator-type coffee maker. If grinding whole beans, set the coffee grinder to a coarse grind. A finely ground coffee may leave sediment in your cup or cause the coffee basket to overflow.

Heating Water

The Capresso Perk can be used to make hot water for tea, hot cocoa or instant coffee.

  4. Place coffee basket on tube. Hold the top of the tube and place tube and coffee basket into the heating well (Fig. 5). (Using the tube and basket will speed heating time.) Place coffee basket lid on coffee basket.

  5. Place lid onto percolator body using the markings to help lock in place. (Fig. 6). Scalding may occur if the lid is removed during the brewing cycle! Ensure the cord is plugged into the percolator; then plug the cord into an electrical outlet. The unit automatically turns on. Water is hot when indicator light illuminates.

  6. Unplug after use.

CAUTION: Do not touch the stainless steel or glass parts until the machine has completely cooled down. The stainless steel and glass parts will be extremely hot after heating, always use caution when handling the hot percolator. Only use the handle (Fig. 1, I) when touching the hot percolator.

Cleaning & Maintenance

  1. After each use, unplug cord from outlet then remove cord from the percolator. Let cool completely before cleaning as the parts will be very hot after brewing or heating.

  2. Remove lid, coffee basket, coffee basket lid and tube. Wash these parts in hot, soapy water. (These parts can also be washed on the upper rack of the dishwasher).

WARNING: Do not put percolator body or power cord in dishwasher or immerse in water!

  1. Rinse all parts thoroughly and dry.

NOTE: Make sure the washer at bottom of the tube remains loose. If coffee grounds get stuck in this area, remove them under running water or with a wooden toothpick. Then rinse and dry.

  1. Fill the percolator half-full with hot water. Add a drop of liquid dishwashing detergent and wash the inside of the percolator. Use a soft sponge and clean the inside of the heating well. This part must be properly cleaned to maintain the proper operation of the percolator.

Do not immerse percolator body or power cord in water!

Do not use steel wool or abrasive cleaners on the percolator body as this could damage the machine.

  1. Drain the soapy water through the spout; then fill the percolator with hot water to rinse. Pour hot water through spout to clean the spout. Repeat with another hot water rinse. Dry completely before storing the appliance. Store with cover off.

  2. Clean outside of percolator with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive scouring pads or cleansers.

Descaling

To keep your coffee maker operating efficiently, it is important to decalcify at least every 2-4 months depending on local water hardness.

  1. Dissolve 1 oz. (28 g) of Capresso Cleaning Solution (or other descaling agent) with 6 cups. (32 oz) of water and pour mixture into the percolator.

  2. Assemble the percolator with tube, coffee basket, coffee basket lid and percolator lid in place.

  3. Plug in and allow the cleaning solution to pass through the system. When perking has stopped, let the solution sit for another 15 minutes.

  4. Unplug and drain the percolator. Rinse a few times with cold water.

  5. Let cool and then clean according to "Cleaning & Maintenance" section.

Hints for Great Tasting Coffee

  1. A clean coffee maker is essential for making great tasting coffee. Regularly clean the coffee maker as specified in the "Cleaning & Maintenance" section.
  2. Store unused ground coffee in a cool, dry place. After opening a package of ground coffee, reseal it tightly or place into an airtight container. DO NOT store ground coffee in the refrigerator or freezer.
  3. For an optimum coffee taste, buy whole coffee beans and grind just before brewing. Keep unused whole beans in an airtight container in a cool dry place.
  4. Always use fresh, cold water in your Capresso Perk. When possible use filtered water for purest flavor.
  5. DO NOT reuse ground coffee since this will greatly reduce the coffee's flavor. Reheating coffee is not recommended as coffee is at its peak flavor immediately after brewing.

Troubleshooting

Coffee does not brew.

  • Check that the tube is correctly placed inside the heating well so hot water can travel to the coffee basket (Fig. 5).
  • Check that the washer on the end of the tube is free of any coffee particles.
  • Check that the tube is not clogged by cleaning with a pipe cleaner.
  • Check that the cord is plugged into both the percolator and the electrical outlet.
  • Ensure the coffee basket holes are not clogged by cleaning with a toothpick.
  • Ensure coffee basket is not overfilled as excess grounds won't allow water to pass through properly.

Coffee grounds are getting into the cup.

  • Use a coarser ground coffee.
  • Wet the interior of the coffee basket prior to adding the ground coffee.
  • Use a paper filter designed specifically for percolators.
  • Ensure coffee basket is not overfilled as this could cause coffee grounds to overflow. See “Coffee Making Chart” on page 7.

Coffee is weak.

  • Fill the coffee basket to the maximum marking (8) and add less water (4-6 cups) to the percolator body.
  • Only use cold water in the percolator. Warm water will not allow the percolator to work properly.
  • Check that the coffee basket holes are not clogged.
