Frequently Asked Questions - 70-1770 Metra

What vehicles is the Metra 70-1770 compatible with?
The Metra 70-1770 is designed for select Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Mitsubishi vehicles from the 1990s and early 2000s. Always verify your vehicle's specific year and model using Metra's online fit guide before purchase.
Do I need any additional tools for installation?
Installation typically requires basic tools like a panel removal tool and wire crimpers if splicing is needed. However, this harness is designed for plug-and-play installation, so no cutting or soldering is required in most cases.
Will this harness retain factory features like steering wheel controls?
This standard wiring harness does not retain factory features such as steering wheel controls or amplifier integration. For those features, you may need additional adapters like the Metra Axxess series.
How do I identify which wire is which?
The wires are color-coded according to industry standards (e.g., yellow for constant 12V, red for accessory, black for ground, and speaker wires with striped patterns). Refer to the included wiring diagram for exact mapping.
Can I use this harness with an aftermarket amplifier?
Yes, but you may need to bypass the factory amplifier if equipped. This harness provides direct speaker-level outputs. If your vehicle has a factory amp, a separate adapter or line output converter may be required.
Is the Metra 70-1770 compatible with a double-DIN stereo?
Yes, the harness itself is agnostic to stereo size. However, you may need a separate dash kit (like Metra 95-xxxx) to mount a double-DIN unit securely.
What if my vehicle uses a different wiring configuration?
Metra offers many harnesses for different vehicle configurations. If this model does not match, consult Metra's vehicle fit guide or contact support to find the correct part.
How do I ensure a secure connection without soldering?
Use butt connectors or heat shrink connectors for a reliable crimp. Alternatively, some installers use solder and heat shrink for permanent durability.
What is the warranty for this wiring harness?
Metra offers a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. If it fails due to faulty workmanship, contact Metra for a replacement.
Can I reuse this harness if I change vehicles?
No, each harness is vehicle-specific. Using it in a different model may cause improper connections or damage. Always purchase a harness designed for your new vehicle.

STEP 1 -- CONNECT WIRES

Revision 10/17/16

A. Connect wires below to the matching function of each wire on your receiver (refer to instruction supplied with receiver). The wire colors of your new receiver may, or may not, match the wire colors of the adaptor. Match adaptor and receiver wires by function, disregarding color.
B. Your receiver illumination wire could be Orange or Orange/White. As with other wires, match this wire to the illumination wire in this harness by function, not by color. If your receiver does not have an illumination wire, tape off the illumination wire.
C. If there is no Ground wire in the factory harness, connect new receiver's Ground wire to vehicle chassis.
D. Individually tape off any unused wires.
E. Make final connections following instructions on page 3.

STEP 1 -- CONNECT WIRES (continued)

F. The speaker plug in this harness set may not be directly compatible with your vehicle's wiring if the vehicle is equipped with a JBL, or Premium Sound amplifier. An additional adaptor may be needed to correctly interface an aftermarket receiver with a JBL or Premium Sound amplifier.
G. In some cases, Ford's front speaker negative leads (wires) are reversed. To test, plug in the wiring harness. Touch the positive and negative leads of the left speaker to a "C" or "D" cell battery (1.5 volts). If you hear a "pop", your vehicle is wired normally. If no "pop" is heard, connect the front speaker negative leads in reverse. Left front speaker negative becomes right front speaker negative.
H. Individually tape off any unused wires.
I. Make final connections following instructions on page 3.
