Dual 6½" LCR Speaker
Owner's Manual
INTRODUCTION
Congratulations and thank you for purchasing the GL6 Dual 6½ inch 2-way LCR Bookshelf Speaker from Proficient. The system is designed to be used in 2, 2.1, LCR, 5.1 or 7.1 home theater systems using the Proficient Signature Series GS10, 10 inch powered subwoofer, available separately, or other optional subwoofer. The sound from the dual injection molded graphite woofers and silk dome tweeter is powerful and they work together extremely well to provide a natural, seamless sounding speaker system.
The GL6 uses two woofers wired in parallel in a W-T-W arrangement; they combine to provide a focused vertical output and wide horizontal dispersion pattern. The result is not only higher output but much lower distortion compared to a single woofer system. In this configuration, each woofer gets less than one half the total input power and together they provide four times the acoustic output level compared to one woofer driven by the same power, and the results are obvious.
To achieve natural sound quality in the mid-range frequencies, Proficient engineers created a special formulation of graphite, Polypropylene and carbon fiber materials and combined them using an injection molded process. This combination of properties not only provides good midrange sound quality but also provides the cone stiffness required to produce good solid deep low-frequency bass. Achieving this character is especially important for a two-way system without a dedicated midrange.
The 1 inch voice coil diameter silk dome tweeter provides excellent off-axis response by nature of its dome shape, complimenting the dispersion of the woofers. The material properties of the IMG woofer cone and silk dome tweeter work together to provide a seamless sound quality so mid and high frequencies audibly appear to emanate from the middle of the baffle and not individually from the woofer or tweeter.
Second order crossover topology is used to provide optimum summing at the crossover frequency and protection to the high-frequency driver components. Signature Series systems use high quality metallized foil capacitors and air-core inductors for the more sensitive high-frequency circuits. Iron-core inductors and electrolytic capacitors are used in the low-and mid-frequency circuits. All components are low series resistance grade components which have excellent power handling capabilities.
A high-gloss black Polymer coating helps to acoustically seal and dampen the enclosure. 18mm MDF is used for the baffle and 15mm MDF material is used throughout the rest of the enclosure to further minimize vibrations.
The GL6 uses a bass-reflex design with dual flared-end port tubes that tune the enclosure, and maximize bass performance at roll-off. An easy to remove treated wood frame cloth grille completes the aesthetics of the GL6 system.
To be sure that you optimize the performance of your GL6 Speakers, please read this manual carefully and follow all instructions for installation and setup of your Proficient Signature GL6 Speakers.
SPEAKER PLACEMENT
Determine The Ideal Listening Zone
The area where the user will most likely be sitting when listening to the speakers is the Ideal Listening Zone. When positioning the GL6, the distance between the left and right speakers should as closely equal the distance from one speaker to the listener as possible. Diagram 1 (A=B=C)
Stereo Music
If using two GL6 speakers for stereo listening, place the speakers on an entertainment center, an appropriate piece of furniture or speaker stands so the tweeters are at about the same height as the listeners ears when in a seated position.
Though the GL6 can be positioned horizontally (on their sides) or vertically (on their ends), for stereo listening, vertical placement will produce the best results for music. Also note that though the GL6 are designed to perform on their own, the Proficient Signature Series GS10 Subwoofer can add even greater enjoyment from smooth, balanced bass extension. Visit: proficientaudio.com and navigate to Home Theater for additional information.
Stereo Audio With Video
Basically the same considerations for speaker placement as Stereo Music, above. In this application, with the speakers are oriented vertically (on their ends) locating the tweeter as close to the center of the video display, with the speakers at equal distances to the left and right of the video display will create an effect where the sound emanates from the picture. Diagram 1 Speaker Location
Center Channel
When used for center channel, the GL6 should be placed directly above or below the video display as shown in Diagram
- The GL6 can be located below the video display as shown or above the video display, if system components are installed in a wall unit or if there is a shelf directly above the video display. In either case, be sure the shelf is secure and can support the weight of the speaker.
5.1 and 7.1 Surround Sound
GL6 speakers are also ideal for use in surround sound systems. They will provide excellent detail and dynamics in these types of systems. Speakers should be located as shown in Diagram 1 at equal distance from the Ideal Listening Zone. For placement, try to keep the tweeters for all speakers as close to the same level as possible, preferably the same height as the listener's ears in a seated position, which should also be about the same height as the middle of the video display. (Diagram 2) If connecting the GL6 speakers in a 7.1 or more channel surround system, please refer to the speaker placement instructions in the surround processor's manual.

SPEAKER CONNECTIONS
- Use 16AWG (min) 2-conductor stranded speaker wire for speaker connection.
- Strip approximately 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch off the ends and twist the strands together so there are no loose ends that can cause shorts.
- Loosen the GL6 Speaker Terminals as shown in Diagram 3 so there is enough room between the post and the collar to feed the stripped wire through without damaging the strands.
- Tighten the post to secure the wire.
- Repeat for all Speakers, + and -.
- Confirm connection and polarity.
- Connect the speaker wires to the appropriate + and - terminals on the receiver/amplifier.
- Confirm connection, polarity and position. Be sure all + and - are correct and that left, right, center and surround speakers are connected to the proper terminals and positioned correctly. Improper positioning of multi-channel speakers will adversely affect system performance. Diagram 4
NOTE: Subwoofer connections are not shown in Diagram 4; Diagram 4 is for general reference, please refer to the amplifier and subwoofer manuals for specific instructions.

PROTECTING THE HIGH-GLOSS CABINET FINISH
The finish on the GL6 is a durable high-gloss Polymer coating, that while durable, should be carefully maintained. Do not place any hard object directly on the cabinet without first putting down a soft cloth or other nonabrasive pad. Do not place any liquid containers including drinks, flower vases or plants directly on the cabinet to avoid water marks.
To clean the cabinet, use a feather duster to remove dust. Dust can be abrasive and wiping dust with a rag can cause scratches. If additional cleaning is required, use a soft damp cotton cloth to clean the cabinet surface. Do not leave any residual moisture on the cabinet surface.
