Frequently Asked Questions - S352BU313R StarTech.com

What type of hard drive can I install in the S352BU313R?
You can install a standard 3.5-inch SATA hard drive (HDD) or solid-state drive (SSD) with SATA I, II, or III interface. The enclosure supports drives up to 8 TB.
How do I connect the enclosure to my computer?
Use the included USB 3.0 cable or an eSATA cable (not included) to connect the enclosure to your computer. For best performance, use a USB 3.0 port.
Why is my drive not detected?
Ensure the drive is properly seated and the power adapter is connected. Try a different USB port or cable. If using eSATA, ensure your computer supports eSATA and the driver is installed.
Can I use this enclosure with both USB and eSATA simultaneously?
No, the enclosure supports only one interface at a time. Use either USB or eSATA, not both simultaneously.
What is the maximum data transfer speed?
With USB 3.0, the transfer speed can reach up to 5 Gbps. With eSATA, it is limited to 3 Gbps. Actual speed depends on the drive and system.
Is the enclosure compatible with macOS?
Yes, it works with macOS. However, if you use HFS+ file system, the drive will be read-only on Windows. Formatting to exFAT allows read/write on both.
Does the enclosure require an external power supply?
Yes, the enclosure comes with an external 12V DC power adapter because 3.5-inch drives require more power than USB can provide.
How do I insert the hard drive?
Slide open the enclosure cover, insert the drive into the SATA connector, and secure it with the included screws. Then close the cover.
Can I use this enclosure as a bootable drive?
Yes, if your computer's BIOS supports booting from USB or eSATA, you can install an operating system on the drive and boot from it.
What should I do if the drive overheats?
Ensure the enclosure is placed in a well-ventilated area. Avoid covering the ventilation slots. If overheating persists, check the drive's health.

About USB 3.1 Gen 2

USB 3.1 Gen 2 connectivity standard offers speeds up to 10Gbps. The S352BU313R is backwards compatible and supports USB 2.0 and USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5Gbps).

Install a drive

Warning! Drives should be handled carefully, especially when they're transported. If you're not careful with your drives, you may lose data as a result. Always handle storage devices with caution. Make sure that you're properly grounded by wearing an anti-static strap when you install any computer component. If an anti-static strap isn't available, touch a large, grounded metal surface for several seconds to discharge any built-up static electricity.

  1. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the four screws in the back panel of the dual-bay enclosure.

Note: If you're using the dual-bay enclosure for the first time, you don't need to remove any screws because the dual-bay enclosure ships without the screws installed.

  1. Slide the back panel away from the dual-bay enclosure to reveal the drive tray.
  2. Place the drive tray on its side with the green Set RAID button facing upwards.
  3. Gently slide a 3.5 in. HDD, SSD, or SSHD into one of the drive trays so that the SATA connector on the drive lines up with the corresponding connector on the drive tray. The connector on your drive is keyed so that it only fits in the drive tray one way.
  4. To secure the drive in place, use a Phillips screwdriver to insert two of the provided screws into each side of the drive tray the drive is in, and tighten the screws in place.
  5. To install a second drive, repeat steps 4 and 5.
  6. Set a RAID mode. For more information about how to do this, see the "Set a RAID mode" section.
  7. Slide the drive tray back into the dual-bay enclosure.
  8. Use a Phillips screwdriver to insert the four screws into the back panel, and tighten the screws in place.
  9. Connect the universal power adapter to the Power adapter port on the dual-bay enclosure and a power outlet.
  10. Connect one of the provided USB cables to the USB 3.1 port on the dual-bay enclosure and a USB port on your computer.
  11. Move the Power switch on the dual-bay enclosure to the ON position.
  12. Use the Fan switch on the dual-bay enclosure to turn on the fan.

Set a RAID mode

To configure a RAID mode, you need to use the RAID mode DIP switches and the green set RAID button located on the inside of the dual-bay enclosure.

Warning! Setting or changing your RAID configuration will erase the data or metadata on your existing drives. Save or back up any important data before you proceed.

  1. Move the Power Switch on the dual-bay enclosure to the OFF position.
  2. Use a Philips screwdriver to remove the four screws in the back panel.
  3. Remove the drive tray from the dual-bay enclosure.
  4. Move the RAID mode DIP Switches to the correct position for the RAID mode that you want to set. For more information about the switch positions, see image at the end of this article.
  5. Connect the Universal Power Adapter to the Power Adapter Port on the dual-bay enclosure and a power outlet.
  6. Connect the USB Cable to the rear of the enclosure, and the computer.
  7. Open a disk management utility (Disk Management on Windows, Disk Utility on macOS).
  8. Move the Power Switch on the dual-bay enclosure to the ON position.
  9. Let the dual-bay enclosure power on, the drives will begin to spin up.

Note: This may take up to 30s depending on the capacity of the drives.

  1. Once the drives (or drive if a RAID mode is already configured) show up in the disk management utility, press and hold the green Set RAID Button for 10 seconds until the drive LEDs begin to blink.

  2. Once they blink, set the Power Switch on the dual-bay enclosure to the OFF position, and disconnect the Universal Power Adapter from the Power Adapter Port.

  3. Slide the drive tray back into the dual-bay enclosure.

  4. Use a Philips screwdriver to insert the four screws into the back panel, and tighten the screws in place.

  5. Reconnect the Universal Power Adapter to the Power Adapter Port and move the Power Switch to the ON position.

  6. Wait for the disks to spin up fully, and show up in the disk management utility.

  7. Initialize and format the drive(s) before use.
