Frequently Asked Questions - Fuego EQMF100AS ELECTROLUX

How do I light the Fuego EQMF100AS barbecue?
To light, ensure the lid is stowed, turn the control knob to the high flame symbol while pressing it in. If using the electronic ignition, a clicking sound indicates sparking. If it doesn't light within 5 seconds, turn off, wait for gas to clear, and try again. For manual lighting, use the match holder provided.
What type of gas does the barbecue use?
The barbecue uses LPG (propane) with a 9 kg (20 lb) cylinder. Always use a cylinder in good condition and connect it to the regulator.
Can I use the barbecue indoors?
No, the Fuego barbecue must only be used outdoors in a well-ventilated area. Using it indoors can lead to gas accumulation and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Why won't my barbecue light?
Common causes: no gas (check cylinder valve is on), flat battery (replace AA battery), or dirty igniter. If ignition fails, try manual lighting. Also ensure the burner drawers are locked properly as the safety cut-off valve prevents gas flow if unlocked.
How do I clean the cast iron cooking plates?
After use, remove solid debris with a brass brush, wipe off grease with paper towel, wash with mild detergent and hot water, dry immediately, and coat with a light layer of cooking oil. Do not put them in the dishwasher.
What should I do if I smell gas?
Do not try to light the barbecue. Turn off the gas at the cylinder immediately, extinguish any open flames, open the lid, and remove the battery. Check for leaks using soapy water. If the leak persists, turn off gas and contact the Electrolux Service Centre.
How do I adjust the low flame setting?
Light the burner, turn the control knob to the lowest setting (fully counter-clockwise), remove the knob, hold the valve stem with pliers, and insert a thin flat-tipped screwdriver into the shaft to adjust the flame to a minimum stable flame.
How do I remove the burner drawer for cleaning?
Remove the cooking plate, cast plate surround, and heat baffle. At the rear of the burner compartment, turn the safety lock clockwise to the open position, then slide the burner compartment forward. After cleaning, push it back and lock.
What does the 2-year warranty cover?
The warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for 24 months for domestic use in Australia/New Zealand. It includes repair or replacement of defective parts at no charge. It does not cover misuse, normal wear, light bulbs, batteries, or filters.
Can I use the retractable lid while cooking?
No, the lid must be stowed in its recess during cooking. It is only used to cover the cooking surface after it has cooled down.

warning

- Improper installation, adjustment, alteration or maintenance can cause injury or property damage. Please contact your nearest Electrolux Service Centre for information or assistance.

• IF YOU SMELL GAS...

  • Do not attempt to light the barbecue,
    – Turn off the gas at the LPG cylinder immediately,
  • Extinguish any open flame and cigarettes, and open the lid.

- Disable the ignition by removing the battery. When the gas has cleared away, move the appliance to a well ventilated position away from any naked flames. DO NOT TEST FOR LEAKS WITH A NAKED FLAME.

- Turn on the gas and locate the leak using a solution of soapy water (see page 3 for a full description). If the connection between the cylinder and regulator is leaking then tighten this joint and re-check. Check all connections on the hose and regulator assembly with soapy water and check the hose for wear or damage. Replace if needed.

– If leaking or smell of gas persists turn off the gas and call your Electrolux Service Centre.

- Do not store flammable liquids, vapours, aerosols or combustible materials in the vicinity of this barbecue, in any compartment or drawer of this barbecue, or leave any of these flammable items standing on the top surfaces of the barbecue. Keep the area surrounding your barbecue free of trash.

- The LPG cylinder that is connected to this barbecue must be located in the drawer designed for housing of this cylinder. Any LPG cylinder not connected to this barbecue must not be left in or near this barbecue.

  • LPG Cylinders must not be overfilled, as this can lead to build up of excess pressure in the cylinder followed by venting of gas from the pressure relief safety valve on the cylinder. Gas vapour venting from the relief valve is flammable. Confirm with your LPG dealer that your cylinder has not been overfilled.

Each cooking section consists of a drawer with stainless steel burner and enamelled heat baffle (1) under grill plate. Above each drawer is a cast iron plate support (2), cooking plate (3) and centre vent (4) that sits between each cooking surface. The enamelled heat baffle reflects heat upward into the cooking area increasing grilling performance and diverts dripping oil and fats away from the flame to reduce flare-ups. Note: The heat baffle is not used under the solid cooking plate.

Operating your barbecue

Lighting Instructions

Confirm that the barbecue has been properly prepared for use according to the instructions in the section "Preparing for use".

ELECTROLUX Fuego EQMF100AS - Lighting Instructions - 1

When lighting the barbecue do not lean over the cooking surfaces – keep well clear.

When attempting to ignite the burner, if the burner does not ignite within 5 seconds then turn the control to off and allow several minutes for any unburnt gas to clear away before executing another ignition attempt.

Lift and stow the cover in its recess prior to attempting ignition.

To ignite a burner on the Fuego Turn the control to the high flame mark (♂) while simultaneously pressing the control in.

To ignite the burner on the Fuego Compact Turn the control to the high flame mark ( ⚙ while simultaneously pressing the separate ignition knob.

This will allow gas to flow to the burner while sparks are discharged from the spark electrode. When the burner ignites release the knob and sparking will cease. The control can now be adjusted to obtain the desired level of heating.

Manual lighting

If in the event of the electronic ignition system not working, (it is advisable to first check the battery), the barbecue has provision for manual lighting. Located in the top storage compartment is a match holder designed to assist safe manual lighting of the barbecue burner.

To light manually, ensure that the lid is in the recessed position, turn gas on at the LPG cylinder, fit a standard 40mm match in the end of match holder and light match. Pass lit match through the top of the cooking surface or corner holes in the solid plate down towards the burner then turn on the gas valve to high flame position to ignite. Adjust burner after ignition.

If ignition fails, turn control valve off and allow several minutes for the gas to dissipate before attempting to light again.

Using the grill and hotplate

Allow 5 – 10 minutes for the cooking surfaces to preheat, then place food on the grill or hotplate and cook to your liking. When cooking is completed turn the controls to the off position and turn the gas off at the cylinder valve. Grilling requires high heat for searing and proper browning. Most foods are cooked at the medium heat setting for the entire cooking time. However, when grilling large pieces of meat or poultry, it may be necessary to turn the heat to a lower setting after the initial browning. This cooks the food through without burning the outside. Foods cooked for a long time or basted with a sugary marinade may need a lower heat setting near the end of the cooking time.

Note: The retractable lid included with the barbecue MUST NOT be used while cooking. The lid can be used to cover the cooking surface once it is cool.

Care and maintenance

Cooking hints

How well your meat is cooked, whether rare, medium, or well done, is affected to a large degree by the thickness of the cut. The cooking time is affected by the kind of meat, the size and shape of the cut, the temperature of the meat when cooking begins, and how well done you like your meat. When defrosting meat it is recommended that it be done overnight in the refrigerator as opposed to a microwave. This in general yields a juicier cut of meat. Use a spatula instead of tongs or a fork to turn the meat, as a spatula will not puncture the meat and let the juices run out. To get the juiciest meats, add seasoning or salt after the cooking is finished and turn the meat only once (juices are lost when the meat is turned several times). Turn the meat just after the juices begin to bubble to the surface. Trim any excess fat from the meat before cooking. To prevent steaks or chops from curling during cooking, slit the fat around the edges at 5cm intervals.

Burner low setting adjustments

The valves on the barbecue feature an adjustable low setting. Due to fluctuations in gas pressure, you may feel it necessary to increase or decrease gas flow in the low position.

To adjust:

  1. Light the burner.
  2. Turn the control knob to the lowest setting (all the way counter-clockwise).
  3. Remove the knob.
  4. While holding the valve stem with pliers, insert a thin, flat tipped screwdriver into the shaft and while viewing the burner adjust to a minimum stable flame.

warning

Before lighting, inspect the gas supply piping or hose prior to turning the gas "on". If there is evidence of cuts, wear, or abrasion, it must be replaced prior to use. Contact Customer Care for a replacement hose.

Grill burner flame height

The factory burners have been set for the correct air and gas mixture. The correct flame pattern is shown below.

Technical diagram of a mechanical device with numbered components and an inset showing a curved blade or blade assembly.

1: Burner tube
2: Tips occasionally flicker yellow
3: Light blue
4: Dark blue
If flames do not appear to be uniform throughout the burner tube, check if the ventilation openings of the burner tube are blocked by dirt, debris, spider webs, etc. In order for burner to work properly there must be no obstructing the flow of combustion and ventilation air. Proceed with cleaning instructions in the next section.

Cleaning and care

The Electrolux Fuego barbecue has been constructed from select grade materials which need general care to ensure optimum performance and appearance. To keep your barbecue looking its best we recommend that the cooking surface and the oil trays are cleaned after every use. We recommend that the barbeque is covered when not in use, particularly in coastal areas.

ELECTROLUX Fuego EQMF100AS - Cleaning and care - 1

warning

Please ensure that your barbecue is switched off and has cooled down before following the instructions below.

Oil residue tray cleaning

Open the lower drawer/s. Slide out oil tray which is located underneath the burner compartment.

ELECTROLUX Fuego EQMF100AS - Oil residue tray cleaning - 1

natural_image Illustration of a kitchen appliance with a bowl of food being lifted by an oven (no text or symbols visible)

Be careful when removing the oil residue tray to ensure that the oil and residue does not spill. Empty the tray and place in dishwasher or wash by hand using mild detergent. Dry and replace after cleaning. Clean oil residue tray after every use to prevent grease and debris from hardening making it more difficult to clean. An absorbent material (dry sand or other non combustible absorbent material) can be used in the oil trays to absorb grease. Ensure the absorbent material is evenly spread in the tray and not higher than the inside edge.

For a thorough clean for the Fuego remove the burner drawers as described in “Removing the burner drawers”. For the Fuego Compact refer to “Burner compartment care” further in this section.

Cast iron plates and plate surround cleaning

The cooking plates and plate surround have a porcelain enamelled coating.

Note: Many food acids, juices, marinades and sauces contain highly acidic elements that will slowly attack the surface of the cast iron if not removed immediately after cooking.

After use remove all solid material from the cooking surface using a brass bristled barbecue brush or plastic bristled sourer. Wipe off the remaining grease with paper towelling. Gently wash the surfaces with a cloth or sponge and a mild detergent and hot water. Dry components immediately and coat the cooking surface with a light layer of cooking oil. This protects the surface when not in use. Do not clean the cooking surface in a dishwasher.

Igniter tip cleaning

If lighting the burners is difficult you may need to clean and adjust the igniter tip located near the burner orifice. To ensure that the igniter lights properly, clean off any cooking residue from igniter tip and burner. Use a very fine grain sand paper to clean igniter tip and edge of burner. Igniter tip should be 2–3mm away from burner edge. This is the ideal distance for most effective ignition.

igniter tip

ELECTROLUX Fuego EQMF100AS - Igniter tip cleaning - 2

caution

Do not use abrasive or caustic cleaners, scourers or metal scrapers on stainless steel surfaces as they may scratch and damage your barbecue. On brushed stainless steel surfaces always clean the surface in the direction of the grain.

Stainless steel surfaces

The barbecue should be covered when not in use. A protective weather cover like EQAF100C and EQAF70C designed specifically for your Fuego unit is recommended to protect your barbecue from outdoor elements. Wash all stainless steel components with a clean cotton or microfiber cloth using hot soapy water. Ensure that all surfaces are dried with a clean dry cloth. Non abrasive stainless steel cleaners can be used to keep your Fuego barbecue looking its best.

ELECTROLUX Fuego EQMF100AS - Stainless steel surfaces - 1

tips and information

Special note on "tea staining"

Sometimes stainless steel surfaces are affected by a brown discolouration called tea staining. This usually occurs in areas which use high heat and can be easily removed using specialised stainless steel cleaners. For best results, we recommend that specialised cleaners be used regularly on all stainless steel components. You will find these cleaners at the Electrolux spare parts outlets.

Teak surface

The teak used on the counter tops has been treated with light coating of protection oil.

Clean surface using a soft sponge and a solution of mild soapy water. Wash down afterwards with clean water. Do not use high pressure hoses, steel wool or wire brushes as all and any residue left in the grain will rust and discolour the wood.

Stubborn and heavily ingrained stains can be removed by sanding with a fine grade of sandpaper, being sure to work only with the direction of the timber grain. After sanding away stains like this you may need to re-oil the surface.

Burner compartment care

At regular intervals, general cleaning of the burner compartment should be undertaken using a sponge or cloth with a mild detergent and hot water. To gain access to the burner area remove the cast cooking plate, cast plate support and heat baffle. Note that the burner compartment is coated in vitreous enamel. For care instruction refer to "Cast iron plates and plate surround cleaning". For a more thorough clean of the burner refer to "Cleaning the burner".

When cleaning the burner compartment be careful not to use excessive water and avoid any water around the ignition point. Be careful not to bend the ignition wire. Remove the oil residue tray from under the burner compartment and place a container in the lower drawer to capture any of the cleaning residue. On the two burner compartment Fuego, the burner drawers can be unlocked and removed for easier cleaning. Refer below on instructions on how to remove the drawer.

Removing burner drawer – two burner Fuego only Remove the cooking plate, cast plate surround and heat baffle. Located at the rear of each burner compartment is a safety lock. Turn the lock to the open position (turn clockwise) and slide the burner compartment forward. After cleaning, replace burner compartment ensuring the drawer is fully pushed in and turn the lock to the locked position. Note: the burner compartments are fitted with a safety cut-off valve. The barbecue will not operate unless the burner drawers are locked into position.

CAUTION HOT Do Not Remove Unit Coil OPEN LOCK Turn clockwise to unlock drawer before pulling drawer out

ELECTROLUX Fuego EQMF100AS - Burner compartment care - 2

caution

The following instructions showing how to remove the burner should only be followed if there is a real need to clean the burner, it is not recommended to do too frequently. Extreme care should be observed, as incorrect re-assembly of the burner or disturbance of the ignition electrode could cause explosion risk or ignition problems, ensure that the instructions are followed very carefully.

Cleaning the burner

Remove cooking plates and cast plate support and heat baffle. Remove burner drawer. Remove screw holding burner to drawer by unscrewing counter-clockwise. Remove burner by lifting up on the end, angle the burner downwards and remove from drawer.

Burner exterior cleaning

Clean the exterior of the burner with a wire brush. Clean stubborn scale with a metal scraper. Clear any clogged ports with a straightened paper clip. Never use a wooden toothpick as it may break off and clog the port. Shake out any debris. Use a flashlight to inspect the burner inlet to ensure it is not blocked. If obstructions can be seen, use a metal wire coat hanger that has been straightened out.

Burner internal cleaning

With the burner removed, shine a flashlight through the opening to ensure there is no blockage. Use a needle to clear any debris. Be extremely careful not to enlarge the hole or break off the needle.

warning

It is extremely important to centre the burner on the orifice properly to prevent a fire hazard or explosion.

Reassembly of the burner

It is critical to the safety of this appliance that the burner is reassembled correctly following these instructions: Carefully put the burner tube back into position in the same way it was removed (lower the inlet end and insert centrally without forcing into the inlet housing). Then lower the opposite end and line up the tab with the screw hole and fasten the screw. Check that the burner is not loose and has correctly engaged in the inlet area. Check that the ignition tip is approximately 5mm away from the gas burner tube. Follow the “Assembling the grates” section to correctly reassemble the barbecue ready for use.
