Frequently Asked Questions - FMM640 Teltonika

How do I insert the SIM card and connect the battery?
Unscrew the 4 bottom screws, remove the cover. Insert the Micro-SIM card with PIN request disabled into slot 1 (closer to PCB) or slot 2 (upper). Ensure the cut-off corner faces forward. Connect the battery as shown in the manual. After configuration, reattach the cover and screw it back.
How do I configure the FMM640 via USB on Windows?
Power the device with 10-30V DC. Connect via Micro-USB. Install the COM port drivers from Teltonika's website. Launch the Teltonika Configurator software (requires .NET Framework 4.6.2). Click 'Connect via USB' to load and modify settings. Save to device after changes.
How can I configure the device using SMS commands?
Send an SMS with the format: setparam 2001:APN;2002:APN_username;2003:APN_password;2004:Domain;2005:Port;2006:0; (note two spaces before the text). 2001-2003 are GPRS settings, 2004-2006 are server settings. After successful command, the device syncs time and sends records to the configured server.
What do the LED indicators mean?
Navigation LED (GNSS): solid on = no signal, blinking 1s = normal GNSS, off = sleep or off. Status LED: blinking 1s = normal, blinking 2s = sleep, fast blink = modem activity, off = boot or not working.
What are the power consumption levels?
At 12V: Deep Sleep <7 mA, Online Deep Sleep <12 mA, GPS Sleep <28 mA, GPRS <120 mA, nominal no load <65 mA, peak with full load <2.5 A.
What mounting precautions should I follow?
Connect wires while module is unplugged. Fasten wires to non-moving parts away from heat. Use 3A/125V external fuse on power line. Connect ground to vehicle frame with very low impedance. Ignition wire should be real ignition (not ACC). Ensure power persists after car sleep.
What safety precautions are necessary?
Use SELV limited power source (10-30V DC). Do not disassemble. Install only by qualified personnel. Avoid lightning storms. Keep device away from water and humidity. All wireless devices may cause interference.
What is the warranty period?
Teltonika offers 24 months warranty for manufacturing defects. Batteries carry a reduced 6-month warranty. Out-of-warranty repairs are available at agreed cost.
Does the FMM640 support Bluetooth sensors?
Yes, it supports Bluetooth 5.0 + LE. Compatible peripherals include temperature and humidity sensors, and universal BLE sensors.
How can I update the firmware?
Firmware can be updated via FOTA Web, FOTA, or Teltonika Configurator (USB). In Configurator, click 'Update firmware' to load new firmware file. Ensure stable power during update.

Mounting recommendations

- Connecting Wires

  • Wires should be connected while module is not plugged in.
  • Wires should be fastened to the other wires or non-moving parts. Try to avoid heat emitting and moving objects near the wires.
  • The connections should not be seen very clearly. If factory isolation was removed while connecting wires, it should be applied again.
  • If the wires are placed in the exterior or in places where they can be damaged or exposed to heat, humidity, dirt, etc., additional isolation should be applied.
  • Wires cannot be connected to the board computers or control units.

- Connecting power source

  • Be sure that after the car computer falls asleep, power is still available on chosen wire. Depending on car, this may happen in 5 to 30 minutes period.
  • When module is connected, be sure to measure voltage again if it did not decrease.
  • It is recommended to connect to the main power cable in the fuse box.
  • Use 3A, 125V external fuse.

- Connecting ignition wire

  • Be sure to check if it is a real ignition wire - power does not disappear while starting the engine.
  • Check if this is not an ACC wire (when key is in the first position, most electronics of the vehicle are available).
  • Check if power is still available when you turn off any of vehicles devices.
  • Ignition is connected to the ignition relay output. As alternative, any other relay, which has power output, when ignition is on, may be chosen.

- Connecting ground wire

  • Ground wire is connected to the vehicle frame or metal parts that are fixed to the frame.
  • If the wire is fixed with the bolt, the loop must be connected to the end of the wire.
  • For better contact scrub paint from the place where loop is connected.

Teltonika FMM640 - - Connecting ground wire - 1

PAY ATTENTION! Connecting the power supply must be carried out in a very low impedance point of on-board vehicle network. Connecting the GND at an arbitrary point to the mass of the car is unacceptable, as static and dynamic potentials on the line GND will be unpredictable, which can lead to unstable FMM640 operation and even its failure.
