How can I power the FRC-8?

The FRC-8 can be powered in three ways: 4 AA batteries (alkaline, NiMH, or lithium), a 9-16V external DC power supply (recommended Zoom AD-19 or DHC-1), or USB bus power from a compatible recorder (note: the F8 cannot supply USB power).

What is the battery life?

Battery life varies by type: alkaline batteries provide 8.5 hours or more, NiMH (2450 mAh) provide 12 hours or more, and lithium batteries provide 16.5 hours or more. These figures are under typical conditions (8 channels used, LED brightness at 60, no keyboard, 5 LEDs lit per meter).

Is the FRC-8 compatible with the Zoom F8?

Yes, the FRC-8 is compatible with the F8 and other multitrack field recorders like the F4. However, the F8 cannot supply USB bus power to the FRC-8, so you will need to use batteries or an external DC supply.

Can I connect a keyboard?

Yes, you can connect a standard USB keyboard to the KEYBOARD port on the side of the FRC-8. This is useful for entering metadata and other text. The port provides up to 100 mA of power.

What does the Auto Power Off function do?

The FRC-8 will automatically turn off if it is not connected to a compatible device and is unused for 10 hours. When connected to a compatible device, it responds to that device's Auto Power Off settings.

How do I clean the FRC-8?

What is the purpose of the OUTPUT fader?

The OUTPUT fader adjusts the level of the selected output (UR, MAIN, or SUB). Use the OUTPUT select key to choose which output to control.

What should I do if the unit malfunctions?

Safety Precautions

In this operation manual, symbols are used to highlight warnings and cautions that you must read to prevent accidents. The meanings of these symbols are as follows.

Warning

Operation with an external DC power supply

Use a 9V-16V external DC power supply. (We recommend ZOOM AD-19 and DHC-1 AC adapters.)
Carefully study the warning indications of the external DC power supply before use.

Operation with batteries

Use 4 commercially-available 1.5 V AA batteries (alkaline dry cell batteries, nickel metal hydride batteries or lithium dry cell batteries).
Carefully study the warning indications of the batteries before use.
Always keep the battery cover closed during use.

Alterations

Do not open the case or modify the product.

Caution

Product handling

Do not drop, bump or apply excessive force to the unit.
Be careful not to allow foreign objects or liquids to enter the unit.

Operating environment

Do not use in extremely high or low temperatures.
Do not use near heaters, stoves and other heat sources.
Do not use in very high humidity or where it could be splashed by water.
Do not use in places with frequent vibrations.
Do not use in places with much dust or sand.

Battery handling

1 Install batteries with the correct +/- orientations.
Use the specified batteries. Do not use new and old batteries together. Do not use batteries of different brands or types together.
Remove the batteries when the unit will not be used for a long time. If a leak occurs, thoroughly wipe the battery case and battery terminals to remove the leaked fluid.

Connection cables and input/output jacks

Always turn the power OFF for all equipment before connecting any cables.
Always disconnect all connection cables before moving the unit.

Volume

Do not use at a loud volume for a long time.

Usage Precautions

Interference with other electrical equipment

In consideration of safety, the FRC-8 has been designed to minimize its emission of electromagnetic waves and to suppress interference from external electromagnetic waves. However, equipment that is very susceptible to interference or that emits powerful electromagnetic waves could result in interference if placed nearby. If this occurs, place the FRC-8 and the other device farther apart.
With any type of electronic device that uses digital control, including the FRC-8, electromagnetic interference could cause malfunction, corrupt or destroy data and result in other unexpected trouble. Always use caution.

Use a soft cloth to clean the exterior of the unit if it becomes dirty. If necessary, use a damp cloth that has been wrung out well to wipe it. Never use abrasive cleansers, wax or solvents such as alcohol, benzene or paint thinner.

Breakdown and malfunction

If the unit becomes broken or malfunctions, immediately turn the power off, disconnect the external power supply, remove the batteries and disconnect other cables. Contact the store where you bought the unit or ZOOM service with the following information: product model, serial number and specific symptoms of breakdown or malfunction, along with your name, address and telephone number.

Note about the Auto Power Off function

The power will automatically turn off if the FRC-8 is not connected to a compatible device and is unused for 10 hours. When connected with a compatible device, it will respond to the Auto Power Off function of that device.

FRC-8 features

• This mixer-style controller can be used connected to F4, F8 and other multitrack field recorders.
• The faders for 8 tracks and the output enable intuitive volume adjustment.

Supplying power

■ Using AA batteries

1. Remove the battery cover on the back, and install the batteries.

■ Using a DC power supply

1. Connect the DC power supply device to the DC IN connector.

Connect a 9–16V direct-current power supply.

1. If there is an adapter, plug the adapter into an outlet.

■ Using USB bus power (F8 cannot supply)

1. Use a USB cable to connect the FRC-8 and the compatible device.

NOTE

When multiple power supplies are connected, they will be used in the following order of priority.

1. DC power supply (Ext DC)
2. USB bus power (F8 cannot supply)
3. AA batteries (Int AA)

FROM F Series HEADPHONE jack

By connecting the HEADPHONE jack output of a compatible device to this with a stereo cable, the input and playback signals from that device can be monitored through the FRC-8 HEADPHONE jack.
