en - Warning and Safety instructions This vacuum cleaner conforms to current safety requirements. Inappropriate use can lead to personal injury and damage to property. Please read the operating instructions before using the vacuum cleaner for the first time. They contain important information on the safety, use and maintenance of the vacuum cleaner. This will prevent both personal injury and damage to the appliance. In accordance with standard IEC 60335-1, Miele expressly and strongly advises that you read and follow the instructions in the “Connection” chapter as well as the safety instructions and warnings. Miele cannot be held liable for injury or damage caused by non-compliance with these instructions. Keep these operating instructions in a safe place and pass them on to any future owner. Always disconnect the vacuum cleaner from the power supply when you have finished using it, before changing any accessories, as well as for maintenance work, cleaning and troubleshooting. Switch off at the wall socket and unplug it. Correct application  This vacuum cleaner is intended for cleaning flooring in domestic households and similar residential environments. This vacuum cleaner is not suitable for use on construction sites. 27

en - Warning and Safety instructions  This vacuum cleaner can be used for all normal cleaning of carpets, rugs and robust hard flooring.  This vacuum cleaner is not intended for outdoor use.  This vacuum cleaner is intended for use at altitudes of up to 4000 m above sea level.  The vacuum cleaner must only be used to vacuum dry floor surfaces. Do not vacuum people or animals. Any other types of use, modifications or alterations are not permitted.  The vacuum cleaner can only be used by people (including children) with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience or knowledge, if they are supervised whilst using it or have been shown how to use it in a safe way and understand and recognise the consequences of incorrect operation. Safety with children  Danger of suffocation. Packaging, e.g. plastic wrappings, must be kept out of the reach of babies and children. Whilst playing, children could become entangled in packaging or pull it over their head and suffocate.  Children under 8 years of age must be kept away from the vacuum cleaner unless they are constantly supervised.  Children aged 8 and older may only use the vacuum cleaner without supervision if they have been shown how to use it in a safe manner. Children must be able to understand and recognise the possible dangers caused by incorrect operation. 28

en - Warning and Safety instructions  Children must not be allowed to clean or maintain the vacuum cleaner unsupervised.  Please supervise children in the vicinity of the vacuum cleaner and do not let them play with it. Technical safety  Before using the vacuum cleaner and its accessories, check for any visible signs of damage. Do not use a damaged appliance.  Compare the connection data on the data plate of the vacuum cleaner (mains voltage and frequency) with that of the mains electricity supply. This data must match exactly. Without modifications, the vacuum cleaner is suitable for 50 Hz or 60 Hz.  The mains electrical plug must be fitted with an appropriate fuse.  AU/NZ: The mains electrical outlet must be fitted with an appropriate circuit breaker.

en - Warning and Safety instructions  Temporary or permanent operation on an autonomous power supply system or a power supply system that is not synchronised with the mains power supply (e.g. island networks, back-up systems) is possible. A prerequisite for operation is that the power supply system complies with the specifications of EN 50160 or an equivalent standard. The function and operation of the protective measures provided in the domestic electrical installation and in this Miele product must also be maintained in isolated operation or in operation that is not synchronised with the mains power supply, or these measures must be replaced by equivalent measures in the installation. As described, for example, in the current version of BS OHSAS 18001–2 ISO 45001.  AU/NZ: Temporary or permanent operation with a selfsufficient or non-mains synchronous energy supply system (e.g. isolated networks, back-up systems) is possible. A requirement for the operation is that the energy supply system complies with all current local and national requirements that apply to stand-alone, solar and/or battery systems. The protective measures provided in the domestic installation and in this Miele product must also be assured in their function and operation in isolated operation or in nonmains synchronous operation, or replaced with equivalent measures in the installation.  While the vacuum cleaner is under warranty, repairs should only be undertaken by a Miele authorised service technician. Otherwise the warranty will be invalidated. 30

en - Warning and Safety instructions  Do not pull or carry the vacuum cleaner by the cable, and be careful not to damage the cable when withdrawing the plug from the socket. Keep the cable away from sharp edges and do not let it get squashed, for example, under a door. Avoid running the vacuum cleaner over the cable. This could damage the cable, plug or socket. The appliance must not be used if any of these have suffered damage.  Do not use the vacuum cleaner if the cable is damaged. If the cable is damaged it must be replaced together with a complete cable rewind. For safety reasons this must only be done by Miele Service or a Miele authorised service technician.  Do not let the vacuum cleaner get wet. Clean only with a dry cloth or slightly damp cloth when disconnected from the mains supply.  Repairs should only be carried out by a Miele authorised service technician. Repairs and other work by unqualified persons can cause considerable danger to users.  Miele can only guarantee the safety of the appliance when genuine Miele replacement parts are used. Faulty components must only be replaced with genuine Miele replacement parts.  The packaging material protects the vacuum cleaner from transport damage. We recommend you keep the packaging for transport purposes.

en - Warning and Safety instructions Correct use  To avoid the risk of damage, do not use the vacuum cleaner without the dustbag, dust compartment filter and exhaust filter in place.  The dust compartment cover will not close without a dustbag fitted. Do not force it.  Do not vacuum up anything which has been burning or is still glowing e.g. cigarettes, ashes or coal, whether glowing or apparently extinguished.  Do not use the vacuum cleaner to vacuum up any water, liquid or damp dirt. Wait until any freshly cleaned or shampooed rugs or carpets are completely dry before attempting to vacuum.  Do not use the vacuum cleaner to vacuum toner dust. Toner, such as that used in printers and photocopiers, can conduct electricity.  Do not vacuum up any inflammable or combustible liquids or gases and do not vacuum in areas where such substances are stored.  Do not vacuum at head height and do not let the suction get anywhere near a person's head.

en - Warning and Safety instructions Accessories  To avoid the risk of injury when vacuuming with a Miele Turbobrush, do not touch the rotating roller brush.  It is not advisable to vacuum directly with the handle, i.e. without an accessory attached as the rim could get damaged and you could hurt yourself on sharp edges.  Only use dustbags, filters and accessories bearing the “ORIGINAL Miele” logo on the packaging. The manufacturer cannot otherwise guarantee the safety of the product.

Disposing of your old appliance

The packaging material is used for handling and protects the appliance from transport damage. The packaging material used is selected from materials which are environmentally friendly for disposal and can generally be recycled.

Before disposing of your old appliance, remove the dustbag and filters and dispose of them with your household waste.

Recycling the packaging material reduces the use of raw materials. Use material-specific collection points for valuable materials and take advantage of return options. We recommend you keep the packaging material for transport purposes.

Disposing of the dustbag and filters Dustbags and filters are made from environmentally friendly materials, and can be disposed of with the normal household waste, as long as they have been used exclusively for general household dust.

Electrical and electronic appliances contain many valuable materials. They also contain certain materials, compounds and components which were essential for their correct functioning and safety. These could be hazardous to human health and to the environment if disposed of with household waste or if handled incorrectly. Please do not, therefore, dispose of your old appliance with household waste.

Instead, please make use of officially designated collection and disposal points to dispose of and recycle electrical and electronic appliances in your local community, with your dealer or with Miele, free of charge. By law, you are solely responsible for deleting any personal data from the old appliance prior to disposal. You are legally obliged to remove any old batteries which are not securely enclosed by the appliance and to remove any lamps without destroying them, where this is possible. These must be taken to a suitable collection point where they can be handed in free of charge. Please ensure that your old appliance poses no risk to children while being stored for disposal.

en Notes on the European Regulation (EU) No. 666/2013 This vacuum cleaner is a domestic vacuum cleaner and is classified as a universal vacuum cleaner in accordance with the above-mentioned regulation. These operating instructions and additional information are available to download from the Miele website at www.miele.com. The annual energy consumption stated in the regulation describes the indicative annual energy consumption (kWh per year), based on 50 cleaning cycles. Actual energy consumption depends on how the vacuum cleaner is used.

The following floorhead and setting were used to determine the values: For energy consumption and cleaning class on carpet and hard floors and sound power level on carpet, the adjustable floorhead was used with the brush retracted (press the  footswitch). The data given in the regulation refers exclusively to the combinations and settings of the floorhead on the different floor surfaces described here. Only original Miele dustbags, motor protection filters and exhaust filters were used for all measurements.

All tests and calculations were carried out according to the following harmonised standards applicable at the time in due consideration of the published regulation guidelines of the European Commission from September 2014: a) EN 60312-1 Vacuum cleaners for household use – Part 1: Dry vacuum cleaners – Methods for measuring the performance. b) EN 60704-2-1 Household and similar electrical appliances – Test code for the determination of airborne acoustical noise – Part 2-1: Particular requirements for vacuum cleaners. c) EN 60335-2-2 Household and similar electrical appliances – Safety – Part 2-2: Particular requirements for vacuum cleaner and water suction appliances.

Connecting the suction hose to the handle (Fig. 02)

The illustrations referred to in the text are shown on the fold-out pages at the end of these operating instructions.

Connection Attaching the suction hose (Fig. 01)  Insert the hose connector into the suction opening on the vacuum cleaner until it clicks into position.  If you want to separate the pieces again, press the release catches at the side of the hose connector, and pull the connector out of the suction opening.

 Fit the connector at the other end of the suction hose into the handle until it clicks into position. 37

en Your vacuum cleaner is fitted with one of the following suction tubes, depending on model: - EasyLock suction tube - Comfort telescopic suction tube Assembling the EasyLock suction tube (Fig. 03)  Hold the suction tube by the connection piece and push it into the second suction tube, turning it clockwise or anti-clockwise until it clicks into position.  Slide the connection piece upwards until it clicks into position. Connecting the handle to the suction tube (Fig. 04)  Insert the handle into the suction tube until it clicks into position. To do this, line up the guides on the two pieces.  To detach the handle from the suction tube, press the release catch and pull the handle out of the suction tube, twisting it slightly as you do so. Adjusting the telescopic suction tube (Fig. 05) One part of the telescopic suction tube is packed inside the other, and it can be adjusted to suit your height for comfortable vacuuming.  Grasp the release mechanism and adjust the telescopic suction tube to the required length.

Connecting the suction tube to the floorhead (Fig. 06)  Push the suction tube into the floorhead and turn it clockwise or anticlockwise until it clicks into position.  To separate the suction tube from the floorhead press the release button and pull the suction tube away from the floorhead, twisting it slightly as you do so. Adjusting the floorhead (Fig. 06) This vacuum cleaner can be used for daily cleaning of carpets, rugs and robust hard floors. Miele offers a range of other floorheads, brushes and accessories for other types of flooring and special applications (see “Optional accessories”). Please observe the flooring manufacturer’s cleaning and care instructions.  Clean even hard floors which are not susceptible to scratching, as well as flooring with gaps or deep crevices in it with the brush protruding:  Press the  footswitch. Vacuum carpets and rugs with the brush retracted:  Press the  footswitch. Activating the timestrip® filter change indicator on the exhaust filter Depending on the model, your vacuum cleaner will be fitted as standard with one of the following exhaust filters (Fig. 07):

Symbols on the holder show where to attach the different accessories.  Attach the accessories holder to the hose connector socket at the top or bottom of the suction hose. Make sure it clicks into position. Adjustable floorhead (Fig. 15)

 Pull the release catch for the dust compartment lid upwards and open the lid as far as it will go (Fig. 08).

The adjustable floorhead can also be used for vacuuming the stairs.

 Remove the indicator strip (Fig. 09).

 Risk of injury caused by falling

 Press the timestrip® filter change indicator on the exhaust filter (Fig. 10). After approx. 10–15 seconds, a thin red line will appear in the left-hand side of the display (Fig. 11).  Close the dust compartment lid securely, making sure it clicks into position. Take care not to trap the dustbag when doing so. The timestrip® filter change indicator shows the remaining functional life of the exhaust filter. After approx. 50 operating hours the display will be completely filled with red (Fig. 12). 50 operating hours equates to approximately one year of use.

vacuum cleaner. You may be injured if the vacuum cleaner should fall from the stairs. When vacuuming stairs, it is best to start at the bottom of the stairs and move upwards.

Use Unwinding the mains cable (Fig. 16)  Pull the mains cable out to the required length.

 Risk of damage due to overheating. The mains cable may overheat after a long period of use. If vacuuming for longer than 30 minutes, the cable must be pulled out all the way. To rewind the cable  Switch off at the wall socket and unplug it.  Press the rewind foot switch. The cable will rewind automatically. Switching on and off (Fig. 17)  Press the On/Off footswitch . 39

en Regulating the suction power (Fig. 18) The suction power can be regulated to suit the type of flooring being cleaned. Reducing the suction power reduces the amount of effort required to manoeuvre the floorhead. The vacuum cleaner has symbols on the controls which indicate the type of use the power levels are suitable for.  Curtains, fabric  Upholstery, cushions  Cut pile carpets, rugs and runners  Energy-saving vacuuming. This setting is also very quiet  Loop pile carpet and rugs  Hard floors and heavily soiled carpets and rugs  Turn the suction power selector manually to the suction power setting you require. Opening the air inlet valve (Fig. 19) It is easy to reduce the suction power for a short time, e.g. to prevent rugs or other textile flooring being sucked into the vacuum cleaner.  Open the air inlet valve on the handle far enough to reduce the suction power. The floorhead will be easier to manoeuvre.

Setting down and storing the vacuum cleaner Park system for pauses during vacuuming (Fig. 20) The Park system allows you to conveniently park the suction tube and floorhead during brief pauses.  Slot the floorhead into the slot in the parking attachment. If your vacuum cleaner is on a sloping surface, e.g. a ramp, – Retract the telescopic suction tube fully – Do not use the park system if your vacuum cleaner has an EasyLock suction tube. Park system for storage (Fig. 21 + 22)

 Risk of electric shock from mains voltage. The mains voltage is applied to the appliance even if it is switched off. After use, switch the appliance off at the wall socket and unplug it.  Stand the vacuum cleaner upright. If your vacuum cleaner has a telescopic suction tube, retract the tubes fully so that it takes up less room for storage.  Slot the floorhead downwards into the parking attachment. If your vacuum cleaner has an EasyLock suction tube, you can detach this so that the vacuum cleaner requires less storage space.

en  Press the release catch on the lower suction tube section and pull the top section out.  Push the connection piece attached to the upper suction tube into the lower suction tube.

Maintenance  Risk of electric shock from mains voltage. The mains voltage is applied to the appliance even if it is switched off. Before carrying out any maintenance work, switch the appliance off at the wall socket and unplug it. The Miele filtration system consists of 3 accessories: - Original Miele dustbag (type GN) - Motor protection filter - Original Miele exhaust filter These accessories will need to be replaced from time to time to ensure that your vacuum cleaner performs efficiently.

We recommend using only genuine Miele accessories bearing the “ORIGINAL Miele” logo on the packaging. Only these will guarantee the optimum performance of your vacuum cleaner and the best possible cleaning results. Dustbags with the “ORIGINAL Miele” logo on the packaging are not made from paper or paper-based materials and nor do they have a cardboard collar. This is why Miele dustbags are particularly long-lasting and reliable. Please note that faults and damage caused by use of accessories which do not bear the “ORIGINAL Miele” logo on the packaging are not covered by the vacuum cleaner warranty. Purchasing accessories Original Miele accessories are available from the Miele webshop, the Miele Customer Service Department and from your Miele dealer. Original Miele accessories are identified by the “ORIGINAL Miele” logo on the packaging.

en  Lift the floorhead off the floor a little. How the airflow indicator works The airflow indicator is set for normal household dust. This generally contains a mixture of dust, hair, threads, carpet fluff, grit etc. Every packet of original Miele dustbags contains 4 dustbags, one AirClean exhaust filter and one motor protection filter. Original Miele multipacks contain 16 dustbags, 4 AirClean exhaust filters and 4 motor protection filters (available depending on country). Original Miele exhaust filters can also be purchased separately from the Miele Customer Service Department or your Miele dealer. Please quote the model number of your vacuum cleaner when ordering to make sure you get the correct filter. You can also order these filters via the Miele webshop. Dustbag timestrip® filter change indicator (Fig. 23) Change the dustbag when the colour marker in the dustbag timestrip® filter change indicator turns red, or sooner if it is no longer effective (see possible reasons for this below). Blocked pores reduce the suction power of the vacuum cleaner. Dispose of the dustbag when it is full. Do not attempt to re-use the dustbag.

However, if the cleaner has been used to vacuum up fine dust, such as plaster, brick dust, cement or flour, the pores of the dustbag will become blocked very quickly. This affects the air permeability of the bag, and the marker will indicate that the bag is “full” even when it is not. The dustbag must be replaced if this is the case. If, on the other hand, a large amount of hair and carpet fluff which typically contains a lot of air is vacuumed up, the indicator may fail to react even though the bag is full. You should still change it. Both these extremes can occur. Replacing the dustbag (Fig. 24)  Press both release buttons at the side of the hose connector, and lift the connector from the suction opening (Fig. 01).  Pull the release catch upwards and open the dust compartment lid as far as it will go.

To check the airflow indicator

The dustbag has a flap which closes automatically when the dust compartment lid is raised to prevent any dust escaping.

 Attach the standard adjustable floorhead to the vacuum cleaner.

 Pull the dustbag out by the grip on the collar.

 Switch the vacuum cleaner on and select the highest power setting. 42

en  Fit the new dustbag into the holder as far as it will go. Leave the dustbag folded up when you take it out of the box.  Close the dust compartment lid securely, making sure it clicks into position. Take care not to trap the dustbag when doing so. A safety device prevents the lid closing without a dustbag in place. Do not force it.  Insert the hose connector into the suction opening on the vacuum cleaner until it clicks into position. Replacing the motor protection filter (Fig. 25) Replace the motor protection filter whenever you start a new packet of dustbags. Every packet of original Miele dustbags contains a motor protection filter. Multipacks contain 4 motor protection filters.  Open the dust compartment lid.  Pull the dustbag out by the grip on the collar.  Unclip the filter frame and replace the motor protection filter.  Close the filter frame.  Fit the dustbag into the holder as far as it will go.  Close the dust compartment lid.

Replacing the AirClean exhaust filter (Fig. 26) Do not use more than one exhaust filter at a time. Replace this exhaust filter every time you start a new packet of Miele dustbags. Every packet of original Miele dustbags contains one AirClean exhaust filter. Multipacks contain 4 AirClean exhaust filters.  Open the dust compartment lid.  Release the filter grille and raise it upwards. Grasp the used AirClean exhaust filter by the clean, unsoiled section (see arrow) and take it out.  Replace it with a new AirClean exhaust filter. If you wish to fit an Active AirClean 30 or HEPA AirClean 30 exhaust filter, see “Replacing one type of exhaust filter with another”.  Close the filter grille.  Close the dust compartment lid. Replacing the Active AirClean 30/ HEPA AirClean 30 exhaust filter (Fig. 27) Do not use more than one exhaust filter at a time. Replace these exhaust filters if the timestrip® filter change indicator is completely red (Fig. 12). The display will be completely filled with red after approximately 50 operating hours; this corresponds to approximately one year of average use. You can continue vacuuming when the light 43

en comes on. However, the suction power will be reduced as will the effectiveness of the filter if it is not replaced in good time.  Open the dust compartment lid.  Lift the exhaust filter and remove it.  Insert a new exhaust filter, making it sure it goes in properly, then push it down into position.  Press the timestrip® filter change indicator on the exhaust filter (Fig. 10). After approx. 10–15 seconds, a thin red line will appear in the left-hand side of the display (Fig. 11). If you wish to fit an AirClean exhaust filter, see “Replacing one type of exhaust filter with another”.  Close the dust compartment lid. Replacing one type of exhaust filter with another Depending on the model, your vacuum cleaner will be fitted as standard with one of the following exhaust filters: a AirClean b Active AirClean 30 (black) c HEPA AirClean 30 (white) Do not use more than one exhaust filter at a time. When changing the filter, please note 1. If you wish to replace exhaust filter a with exhaust filter b or c, it is essential that you remove the filter grille before you fit the new exhaust filter. 44

You must also activate the timestrip® filter change indicator on the exhaust filter. 2. If you wish to replace exhaust filter b or c with exhaust filter a, it is essential that you also fit the filter grille* (Fig. 26). * Filter grille – see “Optional accessories” Replacing the thread lifters (Fig. 28 + 29) The thread lifters on the suction inlet to the floorhead can be replaced. Replace the thread lifters if the pile has worn down.  Lever the thread lifters from the slots. To do so use a suitable tool, e.g. a flat blade screwdriver.  Fit new thread lifters. Replacement parts are available from your Miele dealer or from the Miele Spare Parts Dept.

 Risk of electric shock from mains voltage. If moisture gets into the vacuum cleaner, there is a risk of electric shock. Do not let the vacuum cleaner get wet. The vacuum cleaner and all plastic accessories can be cleaned with a proprietary cleaner suitable for plastic.

 Damage due to unsuitable cleaning agents. All surfaces are susceptible to scratching. Contact with unsuitable cleaning agents can alter or discolour the external surfaces. Do not use abrasive cleaning agents, glass cleaning agents, all-purpose cleaners or oil-based conditioning agents. Dust compartment The dust compartment can, if necessary, be cleaned using a dry duster, brush or, if available, a second vacuum cleaner to vacuum the dust out.

You can save time and money in many cases, as you do not need to call the Miele Customer Service Department. Information to help you rectify faults yourself can be found at www.miele.com/service. The following tables are designed to help you to find the cause of a malfunction or a fault and to resolve it.

The vacuum cleaner A temperature limiter switches the vacuum cleaner switches off automatic- off automatically if it gets too hot. ally. This can occur if, for instance, large articles block the suction tube or when the dustbag is full or contains particles of fine dust. A heavily soiled exhaust or dust compartment filter can also be the cause of overheating.  Switch the vacuum cleaner off immediately using the On/Off foot control . Switch off at the wall socket and unplug it. After removing the cause, wait for approximately 20 30 minutes to allow the vacuum cleaner to cool down. It can then be switched on again.
