Frequently Asked Questions - Straight Line Cyrus Audio

How do I connect my turntable to the Cyrus Straight Line?
The Cyrus Straight Line is a line level amplifier. To play a turntable, you will need an external phono preamplifier connected between the turntable and one of the line inputs.
Why is the standby light red and not green?
The red standby light indicates the amplifier is in Standby mode. Press the Standby key on the front panel; the light will turn green when the amplifier is operating normally.
Can I use the Cyrus Straight Line to bi-amp my speakers?
Yes, the buffered pre-amplifier output can be used with additional power amplifiers for bi-amping or tri-amping. Cyrus Power amplifiers are recommended for this application.
What is the power consumption in standby mode?
In standby mode, the amplifier consumes only 12W, reducing heat and saving energy. Use the standby switch for regular power control.
Why is there no balance control on the amplifier?
The volume control system is a precision engineered potentiometer with very high inter-channel tracking. To preserve signal purity, Cypress designed the Straight Line without a balance control.
How should I clean the Cyrus Straight Line cabinet?
Disconnect the mains supply first. Clean the cabinet with a chamois leather slightly moistened with water. Do not use alcohol, spirits, ammonia or abrasive cleaning agents.
What should I do if there is no sound from either speaker?
Check that the amplifier is switched on (green light), the correct input is selected and the source is playing. Also ensure the Tape Monitor (TP) switch is not engaged inadvertently.
Can I set the volume to maximum to get more power?
No. Always allow headroom and reduce the volume if audible distortion is observed. Turning up to maximum can damage your amplifier and loudspeakers.
What type of mains fuse does the Straight Line require?
For 230V products use a T1A/20mm fuse, and for 115V products use a T2A/20mm fuse. In the UK, the plug fuse should only be replaced with a 3 Amp fuse.
The amplifier seems to produce spurious sounds from the speakers. What could be wrong?
First select another source to see if the problem persists. If it does, restart the amplifier via the rear panel switch. For a single source, check the interconnect cables and, for a turntable, ensure the ground wire is securely connected.

CONNECTING POWER TO THE UNIT

The moulded IEC connector of the mains lead supplied should be plugged in to the power inlet ⑪ on the rear of the unit.

The mains fuse ⑫ is located on the rear panel next to the power switch. It must only be replaced with the following types:

U.K. / Europe - 230V

T1A/20mm

N. America / Far East - 115V

T2A/20mm

In the U.K., the Cyrus Straight Line comes with the mains plug fitted. In the unlikely event that the plug fuse should need replacing ensure that it is only replaced with a 3 Amp Fuse.

CONNECTING A TAPE RECORDER

Two phono cables are necessary for connection of a tape recorder. Connect a phono cable from the Output or Playback sockets of the tape recorder to the Tape Input - TP IN ④of the Cyrus Straight Line. Connect a second phono cable from the Input or Record sockets of the tape recorder to the Tape Record Output - TP OUT ③sockets of the Cyrus Straight Line.

CONNECTING OTHER INPUTS

Connect a phono cable between each system component and the rear panel sockets as marked on the rear panel diagram. At all times observe the colour coding of the phono cable for left and right channel identification. The Cyrus Straight Line provides for connection of a CD Player -CD ⑨, a tuner - TU ⑧, a Home Theatre decoder - VI ⑦ and two auxiliary inputs - AU ⑥ and SP ⑤.

The AU and SP inputs can be used for connection of a wide variety of products such as a second CD player, tuner or VCR, an electronic keyboard, an organ or a second tape deck if only replay is necessary. Always check the technical specification of these products before connecting to your Cyrus Straight Line. Consult your dealer if in doubt.

CONNECTING A TURNTABLE

The Cyrus Straight Line is a line level amplifier. If you wish to play a turntable through your unit, you will need an external phono preamplifier.

CONNECTING LOUDSPEAKERS

The left and right loudspeakers are connected to the rear panel sockets ① and ⑩ respectively of the Cyrus Straight Line using the plugs provided. First, fit the plugs to the loudspeaker cables. Carefully note that the cable carries marking or colours for polarity, (+ and -) may also be marked for direction with an arrow. For correct operation, it is essential that the (+ and -) terminals of the Cyrus Straight Line are connected to the corresponding (+ and -) terminals of the loudspeakers. When fitting the plugs to the cables be sure to line up (+ and -) at each end. The loudspeaker plugs can now be fitted into the speaker sockets of the Cyrus Straight Line.

POWER CONTROL

The mains power switch ⑬ is located on the rear panel of the Cyrus Straight Line (refer to the rear panel drawing on page 4). This switch should be left on for normal operation, except when left unattended for a long period. In this case the mains power should then be switched off or the product disconnected from the AC supply.

Refer now to the front panel drawing on page 7.

When the Cyrus Straight Line is in regular use and the power is permanently on, the STANDBY key ① should be used

for power control. The Standby light ② will show red when the Cyrus Straight Line is off and green when operating.

SELECTING AN INPUT FOR LISTENING

Use the Input Selector switch ③ to select the desired source input. Remember to turn the volume control ⑤ to minimum when switching between sources.

RECORD AND PLAYBACK

If the tape recorder connections are made according to the previous instruction in this manual, then you will be able to listen to a recording by selecting the TAPE MONITOR switch - TP ④.

To cancel this, press the TP switch again. If your tape deck have a three-head facility, then you can use the TP switch to monitor the recording quality directly from the third head, whilst recording. You can record from a source by selecting the appropriate input on the input selector and following the instructions in your tape deck manual.

KNOW YOUR CYRUS STRAIGHT LINE

Power

  • When powered up from the mains switch on the rear panel, the Cyrus Straight Line will enter Standby mode.
  • When switched to Standby, the power amplifier section of the Cyrus Straight Line is shut down to ensure minimal power consumption and reduced heat generation.

Volume and Balance

  • The volume control system of your Cyrus Straight Line is a precision engineered potentiometer which has been chosen for its musical transparency. The inter-channel tracking of this unit is maintained to a very high standard.
  • In order to preserve the purity of the signal path, your amplifier is not equipped with a balance control

Bi-amping / Tri-amping

- The buffered pre-amplifier output of the Cyrus Straight Line may be used in conjunction with added power amplifier blocks to upgrade your loudspeaker system through Bi-amping or Tri-amping. The Cyrus Power is recommended for this application.

USING YOUR CYRUS STRAIGHT LINE

In all audio systems, the audible volume from the speakers will change in level when switching from one music source to another due to the differing output sensitivities of each source component. This is particularly the case with CD players which frequently have output levels very much greater than other programme sources.

For safety and to preserve the longevity of your equipment:

  1. Ensure the volume control is always set to minimum before selecting any source.
  2. Select the input required.
  3. Adjust the level control to give a comfortable listening level leaving a margin of headroom for the amplifier to work in.
  4. NEVER turn up the volume 'as loud as it will go'. If audible distortion is observed, the level is too high and may cause damage to your amplifier and loudspeakers.

TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

If you suspect that your Cyrus Straight Line is not operating properly, disconnect the power and check carefully all connections against the installation section of this handbook. If problems persist, the checklists in this section may help. If in any doubt, consult your local dealer.

No Sound from either Speaker

  • Check that the Cyrus Straight Line is on. The green power light should be "ON".
  • Check that the relevant programme source is selected and is working. For example the CD Player is playing.
  • Check that the Tape Monitor is not selected inadvertently.

No Sound from one Speaker

  • If your loudspeakers are fitted with protection fuses, check that the fuse is intact.
  • Check the interconnect cable integrity on the rear panel and at source. If possible use another interconnect cable.
  • Check the speaker cable connection integrity of the missing channel.

Spurious Sounds from the Loudspeakers

If you experience strange or unusual noises from your system, proceed as follows:

  • Select another source to ensure that this is not a common problem. If the problem remains, switch the Cyrus Straight Line off at the rear panel and turn it on again after a few seconds.
  • If the problem is limited to a single source, check the integrity of the interconnection to the source and in the case of a phono turntable, check that the phono ground wire is secured at the rear panel of the associated preamplifier.

AMPLIFIER MAINTENANCE

There are no user serviceable parts in the Cyrus Straight Line so there is no reason to remove any of the panels. After disconnecting the mains power supply, the cabinet may be cleaned using a chamois leather, slightly moistened with water. DO NOT use cleaning agents containing alcohol, spirits, ammonia or abrasives.
