Frequently Asked Questions - X Power Cyrus Audio

How do I switch between stereo and mono operation?
To configure the X Power, set the STEREO/MONO switch on the rear panel to the desired mode. For mono operation, you will need two X Power amplifiers for a stereo system—one for each channel. Always set the switch while the unit is in Standby to avoid triggering the fault indication system.
How do I connect loudspeakers to the X Power?
Use the supplied speaker plugs and connect them to the rear panel sockets. For stereo, connect the left speaker to terminals ⑩ and ⑨, and the right speaker to ① and ②. For mono, connect the speaker to M+ and M- sockets. Ensure correct polarity and tighten all connections.
What is the MC-BUS connection for?
The MC-BUS allows unified power control across Cyrus components. Connect the MC-BUS sockets in a daisy-chain to enable remote standby switching from a compatible preamplifier or surround decoder. Note: connecting MC-BUS automatically disables the music sensor.
Can I connect an external power supply to the X Power?
Yes, the X Power is compatible with the PSX-R or PSX-R2. Connect the umbilical cord to the PSX-R Connection socket on the rear panel. The connection is detected automatically; no internal adjustments are needed.
How does the Music Sensor work?
The Music Sensor automatically switches the amplifier on when an input signal is detected. If no music is present, it resets to Standby after five minutes. To disable it, hold the front panel Standby key while switching on the rear panel power switch.
What do the front panel indicators mean?
The Standby indicator shows red in Standby and green when operational. The MONO indicator glows red when the rear switch is set to mono mode. If the standby light flashes, refer to the fault indication system in the manual.
How do I troubleshoot faults indicated by flashing lights?
Refer to the troubleshooting guide in the manual. Flashing green/yellow indicates overload; green flashing indicates PSX-R fault; yellow/red means overheating. Always check connections and ventilation, and reset via the rear panel mains switch if needed.
Can I use the X Power for bi-amplification or tri-amping?
Yes, the Chain outputs allow multiple X Power amplifiers to be connected for bi-/tri-amping. Connect the chain output of the first amplifier to the inputs of the next, then connect separate speaker terminals to bass and treble units.
How should I clean and maintain the X Power?
Before cleaning, disconnect the amplifier from the mains supply. Use a damp cloth only—never liquid or aerosol cleaners. Ensure proper ventilation and avoid blocking the slots. No user-serviceable parts are inside; contact qualified personnel for servicing.
What does the warranty cover?
The X Power comes with a two-year warranty from the date of purchase, personal to the original purchaser. It covers manufacturing defects but excludes damage from misuse, unauthorised servicing, or transit. Retain your sales receipt as proof of purchase.

Important – read before making any audio connections

To avoid possible damage to your amplifier, it is essential to disconnect all system components from the mains supply before connecting or disconnecting audio interconnects.

Two channel or Single channel high power operation

The X Power may be configured as either a two channel (stereo) amplifier or as a single channel (mono) amplifier for higher power applications. The X Power is factory set for stereo operation.

Stereo systems

Stereo systems may be set up with either a single X Power set for two channel (stereo) operation or twin X Powers set for single channel (mono) operation.

Audio-Visual multi-channel systems

Both two channel and single channel high power modes may be employed for the multiple channel requirements of audio-visual systems. Two channel and single channel amplifiers may also be mixed in these systems if preferred, for example- three X Power amplifiers set for single channel (mono) operation to drive the Front Left, Right and Centre channels and a single Two channel (stereo) amplifier to drive both the left and right surround channels.

Note: Ensure all equipment is disconnected from the power before any connections or disconnections are made.

Input Connection

Two channel (stereo) operation

Set the STEREO/MONO switch ⑧ to Stereo. Connect a stereo phono interconnect from the output of the preamplifier to the X Power's left and right inputs ⑥ and ⑦. Be sure to observe colour coding of the plugs to keep left and right channels correctly ordered.

Single channel (mono) operation

When switched for single channel mono operation, twin X Power amplifiers are necessary in a stereo system – one for the left and one for the right channel.

Set the STEREO/MONO switch ⑧ on both amplifiers to Mono. Connect a single phono interconnect from the left output of the preamplifier to the 'M' Mono input ⑥ of the left channel X Power. Connect the right output of the preamplifier to the 'M' Mono input ⑥ of the right channel X Power.

Loudspeaker Connection

Fitting the speaker plugs

Check for polarity indicators (+ and -) on the loudspeaker cable and fit the plugs. Observe any signal directionality markings indicated on the cable. If an arrow is printed on the cable it should point toward the loudspeaker.

Two channel stereo speaker connections

Connect the left loudspeaker to the rear panel sockets ⑩ (red speaker plug) and ⑨ (black speaker plug) of the X Power. Connect the right loudspeaker to the rear panel sockets ① (red speaker plug) and ② (black speaker plug) of the X Power.

Dual outputs are provided for the convenient connection of bi-wiring speaker cables.

Cyrus Audio X Power - Two channel stereo speaker connections - 1

Single channel mono speaker connections

Connect the left loudspeaker to the left X Power using the panel sockets marked M+ ⑩ (red speaker plug) and M- ① (black speaker plug).

Repeat this procedure to connect the right channel speaker to the right channel X Power.

Cyrus Audio X Power - Single channel mono speaker connections - 1

Audio-Visual multi-channel systems

Connect each X Power in turn to the system speakers, following the two channel or single channel instructions above, as appropriate.

Bi-amplification

For convenience of connection in applications such as Bi-Amplification the Chain outputs ⑤ and ④ allow more than one X Power to be connected to a Pre-Amplifier.

The Chain facility can be used with two or more X Powers for Bi/Tri-amping by connecting the Chain output of the first X Power to the inputs of the next X Power. Such a system provides the sonic benefits of totally separate power amplification for the bass and treble units of the loudspeakers.

When adding additional X Powers to a system, connect a quality RCA phono interconnect from the Chain output RCA jacks e and d to the inputs ⑥ and ⑦ of the new X Power. For single channel (mono) chain installations, connect the 'M' chain output ⑤ of each Mono amplifier to the 'M' Mono inputs ⑥ of the new amplifiers.

When the input connections to the new amplifier are complete, separate connections may be made to the bass and treble units of the system speakers.

Cyrus Audio X Power - Bi-amplification - 1

MC-BUS connection

Connecting the MC-BUS sockets ③ of the X Power in an MC-BUS system provides unified system power control. An MC-BUS loop is established by connecting single phono cables from the MC-BUS output of one unit to the MC-BUS input of another in a daisy-chain. Complete the loop by returning the MC-BUS output of the final component to the MC-BUS input of the first.

Cyrus Audio X Power - MC-BUS connection - 1

Cyrus Power amplifier

With MC-BUS established you can control the power function of the system from the front panel or remote control of the main Cyrus amplifier.

Connecting to the AC Mains Supply

Connect the socket on the AC Power cable to the Power inlet ⑫ on the rear panel of the X Power. Now connect the cable to a suitable AC power point.

The mains power switch 14 on the rear panel of the X Power should be left on for normal operation, except when left unattended for a long period when it should be switched off or disconnected from the AC supply.

External Power Supply - PSX-R/PSX- R2

The PSX-R is a unique DC power supply that will upgrade the sonic performance of compatible products in the Cyrus range. The PSX- R2 is a performance upgraded version of the PSX-R. Both of these power supplies are compatible for connection to the Cyrus X Power.

The following text refers to the use of the PSX-R, but applies also to the PSX-R 2 .

To connect a PSX-R, disconnect both components from the mains, then plug the connector on the umbilical cord of the PSX-R into the Multi-Pole socket on the back panel. You will need a mains supply for both units.

NOTE: Connection of a PSX-R is detected automatically, so no internal adjustments are required.

How it works

When a PSX-R is connected to a Cyrus product, the power feeds to the internal circuitry are split two ways with the clean, stable power source of the PSX-R feeding sensitive circuit sections while other requirements are supplied internally. This ensures complete isolation of control circuits and sensitive analogue sections reducing AC mains-borne noise and power supply ripple.

OPERATION

Cyrus Audio X Power - OPERATION - 1

Key to the front panel drawing

  3. Mono indicator

Switching On

The mains power switch 14 on the rear panel of the X Power should be left on for normal operation, except when left unattended for a long period when it should be switched off or disconnected from the AC supply.

When power is applied, the STANDBY key ① may be used for power control. The Standby light ② shows red when the X Power is in Standby and green when operational.

In addition to manual power control from the STANDBY key, the X Power also features a music sensing automatic power control which listens for the presence of an input signal and will switch on if music begins to play. If the X Power has been activated in this way it will reset to Standby five minutes after the music has stopped.

Remote power control can also be enabled by connecting the MC-BUS sockets ③ of the X Power to a Cyrus system which includes a Preamplifier, Integrated amplifier or Surround decoder. A number of X Powers may be connected in this way to provide remote standby control of all the system power amplifiers.

Disabling the Music Sensor

In some installations a number of X Power amplifiers may be driven from a single preamplifier source to feed loudspeakers in several extension rooms. In systems such as these it may be preferable to disable the Music Sensor to prevent all amplifiers switching on when music commences.

The user can disable the Music Sensor by holding the front panel Standby key whilst switching on the unit at the rear. The amplifier will now respond only to the front panel standby button and MC-BUS commands. The Music Sensor will remain disabled until power is next disconnected from the unit.

The Music Sensor may also be permanently disabled by returning the X Power to your retailer or the Cyrus factory for an internal adjustment.

NOTE:- If MC-BUS connections are made to the X Power the music sensor is disabled automatically.

Front panel indicators

MONO Indicator

The MONO Indicator ③ will glow red if the rear panel STEREO/MONO switch ⑧ is set for MONO Operation. This switch can be operated only when the X Power is in Standby. Operating it at any other time activates the fault indication system.
