Frequently Asked Questions - P30/C Earthworks

What type of microphone is the Earthworks P30/C?
The Earthworks P30/C is a cardioid condenser microphone designed for professional audio recording, especially for instruments such as acoustic guitar, drums, and vocals.
Does the Earthworks P30/C require phantom power?
Yes, the P30/C needs 48V phantom power to operate. Ensure your audio interface or mixer provides this before connecting the microphone.
What are the ideal applications for this microphone?
The P30/C excels in studio recording, location recording, and measurement tasks due to its smooth frequency response and high SPL handling. It is great for close-miking instruments and capturing detailed transients.
How should I position the microphone for best results?
Point the front of the microphone (marked on the body) toward the sound source. For cardioid pattern, the microphone picks up most sound from the front and rejects rear noise. Place it within a few inches to a few feet from the source, depending on desired room ambience.
Can I use the P30/C with a typical audio interface?
Yes, the XLR output connects directly to any audio interface with a 48V phantom power switch. The low output impedance ensures compatibility with long cable runs.
How do I clean and maintain the Earthworks P30/C?
Use a soft dry cloth to wipe the exterior. Avoid using solvents or getting moisture into the capsule. Store the microphone in its protective case when not in use to prevent dust and damage.
Does the P30/C come with a warranty?
Earthworks provides a limited lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Keep your purchase receipt for warranty service.
What is the frequency response of this microphone?
The P30/C offers a wide frequency response from 30 Hz to 30 kHz, capturing both deep lows and airy highs with exceptional clarity, making it suitable for high-resolution recordings.
Can I use the P30/C for live performances?
Absolutely. With a high maximum SPL of 142 dB and robust brass construction, the P30/C handles loud instruments and live stage use without distortion.
How can I reduce plosives and sibilance when recording vocals?
Use a pop filter in front of the microphone and position it slightly off-axis, if possible, to reduce explosive sounds. A foam windscreen can also help, but a pop filter is more effective for plosives.

P30/C Gooseneck Cardioid Microphone User's Guide HDM™ 48V PHANTOM

Description

Earthworks P30/C is a directional pre-polarized condenser High Definition Microphone™ with a first-order cardioid pickup pattern directly coupled to a dedicated wideband, low output impedance transformerless pre-amplifier. The P30/C requires a standard 24-48V Phantom Power supply. It features a frequency response from 20Hz to 30kHz, fast impulse response, very low handling noise, uniform polar pattern, and high SPL handling capabilities. It provides excellent uncolored rejection of sounds arriving off-axis. Each microphone is delivered with its own calibration chart providing the individually measured frequency response curve. A mounting clip is included with the microphone. The P30/C is protected by US Patent No. 6,091,829.

Applications

Earthworks P30/C is easy to operate. Connect the microphone to a microphone preamplifier supplying 24-48V phantom power using a standard XLR microphone cable. Please allow up to one minute for the microphone to settle. Plugging in the microphone "hot" (phantom power already present at the input) will not damage the microphone, and is actually preferred for faster settling. It is normal for any phantom powered mic to "pop" when plugged in or powered up. Make sure to mute the signal to speakers or headphones when phantom power is first applied.

The excellent performance characteristics of the P30/C give it a very wide range of application possibilities. With its 5-inch flexible neck and small microphone head, this high-quality microphone could be placed where other microphones could not, such as under the strings of an acoustic bass. The P30/C is an ideal choice for recording or live sound applications using percussion, acoustic or amplified instruments, or choir when using microphone stands. It is superior for choir because it doesn't spotlight; rather, it picks up an entire section with no hot spots.

This microphone has no removable parts.

Care of Microphone

Earthworks P30/C microphone is a precision instrument designed and built to provide years of excellent performance. Following these simple rules will help to protect your investment in the P30/C:

  • Avoid touching the front protective screen.
  • Never attempt to disassemble the microphone – it cannot be opened.
  • Avoid extreme heat and condensing humidity. Allow the microphone to warm up in the case when bringing it in from the cold weather.
  • Rough handling may damage the microphone even if no visible marks are left.
  • When not in use keep the P30/C in its case.
