Frequently Asked Questions - U338-000 Tripp Lite

How do I connect a SATA or IDE drive to the U338-000?
Connect the included USB 3.0 cable from the adapter to your computer. Then attach the power supply to the adapter and plug it into an outlet. Connect your SATA drive directly to the SATA port, or connect an IDE drive using the appropriate 40-pin or 44-pin connector. For IDE drives, also connect the 4-Pin Molex power cable. Your computer should recognize the drive automatically.
Is the U338-000 compatible with USB 2.0 ports?
Yes, the adapter is backward compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1 ports. However, data transfer speeds will be limited to the maximum speed of the USB port you are using (480 Mbps for USB 2.0, 12 Mbps for USB 1.1).
Can I use the one-touch backup feature with a Mac?
No, the AI-OTB One Touch Backup software is only compatible with Windows operating systems (XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1). On Mac or Linux, you can still use the adapter for file transfers but the backup button will not function.
What should I do if my drive is not recognized?
First, ensure the drive is properly connected and powered. Check that the power supply is plugged in and the adapter’s power is on. If the drive is new or unformatted, use your computer's Disk Management utility (Windows) or Disk Utility (Mac) to format it. Also make sure you have the latest USB drivers installed.
How do I perform a one-touch backup?
First, install the AI-OTB software from the included CD. Connect your external drive via the U338-000. Open the AI-OTB interface, select the drive, configure backup settings (file locations) in the Config and OTB Path tabs, and save. Then simply press the backup button on the adapter to start the backup.
Can I connect both a SATA and an IDE drive at the same time?
Yes, the U338-000 supports simultaneous connection of one SATA and one IDE drive. You can transfer data between them through your computer.
What are the power requirements for the adapter?
The included external power supply accepts 100-240V AC input (50/60Hz, 0.8A) and outputs 12V DC at 2A. Always use the provided power supply.
How do I restore files from a backup?
Open the AI-OTB interface, go to the Restore tab. You can restore from the drive set up in the OTB Path tab or choose a custom path. Select the files and click Restore.
What is the warranty period for the U338-000?
Tripp Lite provides a 1-year limited warranty from the date of purchase. It covers defects in materials and workmanship. To claim, you need an RMA number and must return the product with proof of purchase.
Can I format a drive through the adapter?
Yes, you can format drives connected via the U338-000 using your computer's built-in disk management tools (e.g., Disk Management in Windows, Disk Utility on Mac). Note that formatting erases all data on the drive.
