Frequently Asked Questions - XM50F KENWOOD

What vehicles are the Kenwood XM50F speakers compatible with?
The XM50F is designed for 1998-2013 Harley-Davidson Street Glide, Ultra, Classic, and Standard (front speaker position). It directly replaces the OE speakers.
What is the impedance of the XM50F speaker?
The impedance is 2 ohms. Do not wire directly to the built-in radio power of '98-'05 factory Harley-Davidson motorcycles, as this can cause damage. Use an amplifier.
How do I install the XM50F speaker?
With ignition off, remove the outer fairing/headlamp assembly. Disconnect stock wires, remove old speaker/grille, clip the XM50F into the grille with terminals at 12 o'clock, reattach with OE screws, and reconnect wires. Ensure polarity (smaller connector = positive).
Do the XM50F speakers come with grilles?
Yes, the kit includes metal mesh grilles that replace the factory grille cloth. They are designed to fit 1998-2013 HD Street Glides, Ultras, Classics, and Standards.
What connectors do the XM50F speakers use?
The speakers have male connectors that mate with the factory female OE in-line connectors. The smaller connector is the positive (+) terminal.
How long is the warranty for Kenwood XM50F?
The warranty is one year from original purchase date in the USA. It covers defects in material and workmanship, but not installation damage, misuse, or unauthorized repair.
Can I use the XM50F speakers without an amplifier?
No, they are designed to be powered by an amplifier. Direct connection to a factory radio (especially '98-'05 Harley-Davidson) may cause damage due to the 2 ohm impedance.
How do I obtain warranty service?
Take or ship the product to any Kenwood Authorized Service Center in the USA with a description of the problem and a copy of the original dated sales receipt. Call 1-800-KENWOOD for nearest center.
What safety precautions should I follow during installation?
Always wear protective eyewear, keep wiring away from moving parts, turn off power until wiring is complete, and consult a professional if unsure. Avoid unstable mounting and do not modify the speaker.
What is the correct orientation of the XM50F speaker terminals in the grille?
Clip the speaker so that the terminals are adjacent to the thickest part of the assembly, resulting in the terminals at the 12 o'clock (top) position. Avoid the 6 o'clock position to prevent shorting against the bracket.

CAUTION

To avoid the risk of human injury or property damage, be sure to read and observe the following safety precautions:

  • Consult a professional technician for installing and connecting the speaker. — Incorrect installation may lead to traffic accidents or malfunctions.
  • Avoid installation where the speaker in unstable. — Make sure that the speaker is stationary and does not rattle. Displacement of the speaker may cause injury.
  • Do not modify the speaker. — Doing so may result in smoke or fire.
  • Keep the volume of sound at an optimum level. Not being able to hear sounds from your surroundings can lead to traffic accidents.
  • In case of abnormality, stop the use and disconnect the speaker. — If operation is continued, smoke or fire may result. Disconnect the speaker and ask servicing.
    • Always wear protective eyewear during installation.
  • To prevent short-circuit, keep all wiring away from moving parts, sharp edges, cut metal, etc.
  • When removing or installing the grille, be careful not to brush the unit with the edge of the grille.
  • Do not switch ON power until wiring is completed.

FOR PROPER INSTALLATION AND USE

Please read the instructions carefully before using this speaker:

  • Be careful not to accidentally kick or apply any sort of strong impact to the speaker.
    • To prevent damaging the speaker, turn off the power of the amplifier before connecting it to the speaker.
  • Do not use the provided parts for other purposes. Otherwise malfunction or fire hazard could result.

NOTE

Observe the following cautions to prevent damage to the speakers:

  • You cannot input the same power as "peak power" continually.
  • When the volume is set too high, the sound may be distorted or abnormal. Reduce the volume promptly in case of such phenomena.

KENWOOD XM50F and XM50R speakers will work best when powered by an amplifier. They have an impedance of 2 ohm and will cause damage if wired directly to the built-in radio power in '98-'05 factory Harley Davidson® motorcycles.

Section 1 - XM50F Front Speaker Installation Instructions

I Installation procedure

  1. With your ignition switch in the "OFF" position, remove your outer fairing/headlamp assembly and set it aside. Refer to a service manual if you need help with this. It's always a good idea to have a towel or something similar on your front fender to avoid dings or scratches if anything is dropped.
  2. Take the 2 wires off each speaker by gently pulling one at a time. Undo the screws that attach each speaker/grille assembly to the inner fairing and remove them. Gently pull the stock speaker out of each grille assembly.
  3. Although the XM50F speakers will work behind the factory grille cloth, the metal mesh grilles in this kit are designed to replace the front speaker grille cloth on 1998-2013 HD Street Glides, Ultras, Classics, and Standards. The factory grille cloth is glued to a plastic mesh, and together, is two-way taped to the main body of the grille assembly. You can usually peel away the mesh from the body of the grille by hand. With the factory grille cloth/mesh off, you should see the exposed two-way tape used to hold the factory mesh on the main grille body. Before applying the new mesh, have a look as you will see it only "lines up" one way.
  4. "Clip" the XM50F speaker into each grille assembly so the speaker terminals are adjacent to the thickest part of the speaker/grille assembly. When installed, this puts the speaker terminals in the 12 o'clock (top) position. You DO NOT want the speaker connectors in the 6 o'clock (bottom) position, as they may short out against the silver horizontal fairing bracket. Place your new speaker/grille assembly onto the inner fairing and re-attach each one using the OE screws. A hand screwdriver is recommended for this step.
  5. Since these speakers are a direct replacement for the OE speakers, the female OE "in-line" connectors mate with the male connectors on each speaker and only go on one way. If you are replacing previously installed aftermarket speakers, you may need to re-install the correct sized connectors (not supplied) onto the factory speaker wires, noting that the smaller connector is the positive (+).
  6. Once you are confident the factory wires are correctly attached to the new speakers, turn on your radio to confirm that both speakers are playing. Then, re-install your fairing/headlamp assembly.

Section 2 - XM50R Rear Speaker Installation Instructions

  1. With your ignition switch in the "OFF" position, remove the factory speaker grilles by undoing the 4 screws on the front of the grilles. Carefully lift up each speaker and take the 2 wires off by pulling one at a time from the stock speaker. Then, remove the speakers.

  2. The female OE "in-line" speaker connectors mate with the male connectors on each speaker and only go on one way. If you are replacing previously installed aftermarket speakers, you may need to re-install the correct sized connectors (not supplied) onto the factory speaker wires. Once you are confident the factory wires are correctly attached to the new speakers, sit them in place, put the grilles back on, and then secure the speaker by reinstalling the 4 screws per grille.

NOTE: The factory rubber "nutserts" on the rear pod side can be finicky. It's a good idea to get all 4 grille screws "started" and then get each one snug. Gradually tighten each one down making sure all 4 screws holding the grille down are secure!

  1. Turn your radio on and confirm that both speakers are playing.
