To remove any remaining glue:

- Hub briskly with thumb to make a ball, then remove.

OR

- Soak area with liquid hand-dishwashing detergent before removing glue as described above. Do not use sharp instruments, rubbing alcohol, flammable fluids, or abrasive cleaners. These can damage the material. See "Important Safety Instructions" on page 3.

NOTE: Do not remove any permanent instruction labels inside your refrigerator. Do not remove the Tech Sheet fastened under the refrigerator at the front.

Cleaning it before use

After removing all packaging materials, clean your refrigerator before using it, if necessary. See cleaning instructions on pages 24-25.

Plugging it in

A 115 Volt, 60 Hz., AC only 15 or 20 ampere fused and properly grounded electrical supply is required. It is recommended that a separate circuit serving only this appliance be provided. Use a receptacle which cannot be turned off with a switch or pull chain. Do not use an extension cord.

Using the ice and water dispensers (on some models)

WARNING
Roper RS20AWXEN00 - Using the ice and water dispensers (on some models) - 1
Cut Hazard

Use a sturdy glass when dispensing ice or water.

Failure to do so can result in cuts.

Ice dispenses from the ice maker storage bin in the freezer. When you press the dispenser bar, a trapdoor opens in a chute between the dispenser and the ice bin. Ice moves from the bin and falls through the chute. When you release the dispenser bar, a buzzing sound may be heard for a few seconds as the trapdoor closes. The dispenser system will not operate when the freezer door is open.

USING YOUR REFRIGERATOR

To dispense ice:

  1. Press a sturdy glass against the ice dispenser bar. Hold glass close to dispenser opening so ice does not fall outside of glass.
  2. Remove the glass to stop dispensing.

NOTE: The first few batches of ice may have an off flavor from new plumbing and parts. Throw the ice away. Also, take large amounts of ice from the ice bin, not through the dispenser.

The water dispenser

Chilled water comes from a tank behind the meat drawer. It holds approximately 1½ quarts (1.5 L).

When the refrigerator is first hooked up, press the water dispenser bar with a sturdy glass or jar until you draw and discard 2 to 3 quarts (1.9 to 2.8 L). The water you draw and discard rinses the tank and pipes.

Allow several hours to chill a new tankful.

NOTE: The small tray beneath the dispenser is designed to evaporate small spills. There is no drain in this tray. Do not pour water into it.

To dispense water:

  1. Press a sturdy glass against the water dispenser bar.
  2. Remove the glass to stop dispensing.

NOTE: Dispense enough water every week to maintain a fresh supply.

Using the automatic ice maker (on some models)

Here are a few things you will want to know about your automatic ice maker:

- The ON/OFF lever is a wire signal arm. DOWN to make ice automatically. UP to shut off the ice maker.

NOTE: Do not turn ice maker on until it is connected to the water supply. Instructions for ice maker water supply hook-up are attached to the back of the refrigerator cabinet.

  • It is normal for ice crescents to be attached by a corner. They break apart easily.
  • The ice maker will not operate until the freezer is cold enough to make ice. This can take overnight.
  • If ice is not being made fast enough and more ice is needed, turn the Refrigerator Control toward a higher number. Wait a day and, if necessary, turn the Freezer Control toward C.
  • Good water quality is important for good ice quality. Try to avoid connecting the ice maker to a softened water supply. Water softener chemicals (such as salt from a malfunctioning softener) can damage the ice maker mold and lead to poor ice quality. If a softened water supply cannot be avoided, make sure the water softener is operating properly and is well maintained.

Removing the ice maker storage bin (on some models)

Remove, empty, and clean the storage bin if:

  • the ice dispenser has not, or will not, be used for a week or more.
  • a power failure causes ice in the bin to melt and freeze together.
    • the ice dispenser is not used regularly.

To remove ice bin:

  1. Pull the covering panel out from the bottom and slide it to the rear.

  1. Lift the front of the storage bin and pull it out.
  2. Empty the ice bin. Use hot or warm water to melt the ice if necessary. Never use anything sharp to break up ice in the bin. This can damage the bin and dispenser mechanism.
  3. Wash with mild detergent. Rinse well. Do not use harsh or abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  4. When replacing the bin, make sure it is pushed in all the way. Then push the signal arm down to the ON position to restart ice production.

WARNING

Roper RS20AWXEN00 - WARNING - 1

Electrical Shock Hazard

Unplug the refrigerator before installing ice maker.

Failure to do so can result in death or electrical shock.

IMPORTANT:

  • Use copper tubing only and check for leaks.
    • Install ice maker tubing in areas where temperatures are above freezing.

Tools required:

  • Standard screwdriver
  • 7/16 -inch and 1/2 -inch open-end wrenches or two adjustable wrenches
  • 1/4 -inch nut driver
  • 1 / 4 -inch drill bit
  • Hand drill or electric drill (properly grounded)

NOTE: Your appliance dealer has a kit available with a 14 -inch saddle type shut-off valve, a union, and copper tubing. Before purchasing, make sure a saddle type valve complies with your local plumbing codes. Do not use piercing type or 316 -inch saddle valve which reduces water flow and clogs more easily.

Cold water supply

The ice maker water valve contains a flow washer which is used as a water pressure regulator. The ice maker needs to be connected to a cold water line with water pressure limitations of 20-120 psi. If a problem occurs, call your utility company.

IMPORTANT:

  • It may take up to 24 hours for your ice maker to begin producing ice.
  • If operating the refrigerator before installing the water connection, turn ice maker to the OFF position to prevent operation without water.
  • All installations must be in accordance with local plumbing code requirements.

INSTALLATION IS NOT WARRANTED BY REFRIGERATOR OR ICE MAKER MANUFACTURER.

USING YOUR REFRIGERATOR

Connecting to water line

  1. Find a 12 -inch to 114 -inch vertical COLD water pipe near the refrigerator.
NOTE: Horizontal pipe will work, but the following precaution must be taken: Drill on the top side of the pipe, not the bottom. This will help keep water away from the drill. This also keeps normal sediment from collecting in the valve.
  2. Measure from connection on rear of refrigerator to water pipe. Add 7 feet (2.1 m) to allow for moving refrigerator for cleaning. This is the length of 14 -inch O.D. copper tubing you will need for the job (length from connection to water pipe PLUS 7 feet [2.1 m]). Be sure both ends of copper tubing are cut square.
  3. Turn OFF main water supply. Turn ON nearest faucet long enough to clear line of water.
  4. Using a grounded drill, drill a 14 -inch hole on the cold water pipe you have selected.
  5. Fasten shut-off valve to cold water pipe with pipe clamp. Be sure outlet end is solidly in the 1/4-inch drilled hole in the water pipe and that washer is under the pipe clamp. Tighten packing nut. Tighten the pipe clamp screws carefully and evenly so washer makes a watertight seal. Do not overtighten or you may crush the copper tubing, especially if soft (coiled) copper tubing is used. Now you are ready to connect the copper tubing.
  6. Slip compression sleeve and compression nut on copper tubing as shown in diagram. Insert end of tubing into outlet end squarely as far as it will go. Screw compression nut onto outlet end with adjustable wrench. Do not overtighten. Turn ON main water supply and flush out tubing until water is clear. Turn OFF shut-off valve on the water pipe. Coil copper tubing.

USING YOUR REFRIGERATOR

Connecting to refrigerator

NOTE: The first step for connecting the water line to your refrigerator is different depending on the type of water valve provided with your refrigerator. See the diagrams at right to determine the style of valve you have. (On kit models, assemble water valve to refrigerator per kit instructions.)

  1. For style #1, disconnect the tube clamp on the back of the product and insert the copper tubing through the clamp, as shown at the right. Remove the tape label from the valve inlet and insert copper tubing until it bottoms out (approximately 34 inch). Tighten nut by hand as much as possible; then turn the nut an additional 12 turn using a wrench. Do not overtighten. Reattach the tube clamp and tube to the back of the cabinet. Skip to step 2.

For style #2, disconnect the tube clamp on the back of the product and insert copper tubing through the clamp as shown at the right. Attach the copper tube to the valve inlet using a compression nut and sleeve as shown. Tighten the compression nut. Do not overtighten. Reattach the tube clamp and tube to the back of the cabinet. Move to step 2.

  1. Turn shut-off valve ON. CHECK FOR LEAKS. TIGHTEN ANY CONNECTIONS (INCLUDING CONNECTIONS AT THE VALVE) OR NUTS THAT LEAK.
  2. The ice maker is equipped with a built-in water strainer. If local water conditions require periodic cleaning or a well is your source of water supply, a second water strainer should be installed in the 14 -inch water line. Obtain a water strainer from your nearest appliance dealer. Install at either tube connection.
  3. Reconnect electrical supply to refrigerator.

Understanding the sounds you may hear

Your new refrigerator may make sounds that your old one didn't. Because the sounds are new to you, you might be concerned about them. Don't be. Most of the new sounds are normal. Hard surfaces like the floor, walls, and cabinets can make the sounds seem louder.

The following describes the kinds of sounds that might be new to you, and what may be making them.

Slight hum, soft hiss

You may hear the refrigerator's fan motor and moving air.

Clicking or snapping sounds

The thermostat makes a definite click when the refrigerator stops running. It also makes a sound when the refrigerator starts. The defrost timer will click when the defrost cycle starts.

Water sounds

When the refrigerator stops running, you may hear gurgling in the tubing for a few minutes after it stops. You may also hear defrost water running into the defrost water pan.

Ice maker sounds

  • trickling water
  • thud (clatter of ice)

You may hear buzzing (from the water valve), trickling water, and the clatter of ice dumped into the bin.

Running sounds

Your refrigerator has a high-efficiency compressor and motor. It will run longer than older designs. It may even seem to run most of the time.

Saving energy

You can help your refrigerator use less electricity.

  • Check door gaskets for a tight seal. Level the cabinet to be sure of a good seal.
  • Clean the condenser coils regularly.
  • Open the door as few times as possible. Think about what you need before you open the door. Get everything out at one time. Keep food organized so you won't have to search for what you want. Close door as soon as food is removed.

  • Go ahead and fill up the refrigerator, but don't overcrowd it so air movement is blocked.

  • It is a waste of electricity to set the refrigerator and freezer to temperatures colder than they need to be. If ice cream is firm in the freezer and drinks are as cold as your family likes them, that's cold enough.
  • Make sure your refrigerator is not next to a heat source such as a range, water heater, furnace, radiator, or in direct sunlight.

Caring for Your Refrigerator

Your refrigerator is built to give you many years of dependable service. However, there are a few things you can do to help extend its product life. This section tells you how to clean your refrigerator and what to do when going on vacation, moving, or during a power outage.

Cleaning your refrigerator

Both the refrigerator and freezer sections defrost automatically. However, clean both about once a month to prevent odors from building up. Wipe up spills right away.

To clean your refrigerator, turn the Refrigerator Control to OFF, unplug it, take out all removable parts, and clean the refrigerator according to the following directions.

Vacation and moving care

Short vacations

No need to shut off the refrigerator if you will be away for less than four weeks.

  1. Use up any perishables.
  2. Freeze other items.
  3. If you have an automatic ice maker:

  4. Raise signal arm to OFF (up) position.

  5. Shut off water supply to icemaker.
  6. Empty the ice bin.

Long vacations

If you will be gone a month or more:

  1. Remove all food from the refrigerator.
  2. If you have an automatic ice maker:

  3. Turn off the water supply to the ice maker at least one day ahead of time.

  4. When the last load of ice drops, turn off the ice maker. Make sure all ice has dispensed out of the ice maker mechanism.

  5. Unplug the refrigerator.

  6. Clean it, rinse well, and dry.
  7. Tape rubber or wood blocks to the tops of both doors to prop them open far enough for air to get in. This stops odor and mold from building up.

To restart refrigerator, see "Using Your Refrigerator" on page 8.

Moving

When you are moving the refrigerator to a new home:

  1. If you have an automatic ice maker:

  2. Turn off the water supply to the ice maker at least one day ahead of time.

  3. Disconnect the water line.
    • After the last load of ice drops, lift the signal arm to the OFF (up) position.

  4. Remove all food from the refrigerator.

  5. Pack all frozen food in dry ice.
  6. Unplug the refrigerator.
  7. Clean it thoroughly. Rinse well and dry.
  8. Take out all removable parts, wrap them well, and tape them together so they don't shift and rattle.
  9. Screw in the leveling rollers.
  10. Tape the doors shut and tape the power supply cord to the cabinet.

When you get to your new home, put everything back and refer to page 6. Also, remember to reconnect the water supply line.

CARING FOR YOUR REFRIGERATOR

Power interruptions

If electricity goes off, call the power company. Ask how long power will be off.

  1. If service will be interrupted 24 hours or less, keep both doors closed. This helps food stay frozen.

  2. If service will be interrupted longer than 24 hours:

(a) Remove all frozen food and store in a frozen food locker.

OR

(b) Place 2 lbs. (0.9 kg) of dry ice in freezer for every cubic foot of freezer space. This will keep food frozen for two to four days. Wear gloves to protect your hands from dry ice burns.

OR

(c) If neither a food locker nor dry ice is available, use or can perishable food at once.

  1. A full freezer stays cold longer than a partly filled one. A freezer full of meat stays cold longer than a freezer full of baked goods. If food contains ice crystals, it may be safely refrozen, although the quality and flavor may be affected. If the condition of the food is poor, or if you feel it is unsafe, dispose of it.

Food Storage Guide

There is a correct way to package and store refrigerated or frozen food. To keep food fresher, longer, take the time to study these recommended steps.

Storing fresh food

Wrap or store food placed in the refrigerator in airtight and moisture-proof material. This prevents food odor and taste transfer throughout the refrigerator. For dated products, check code date to ensure freshness.

Leafy vegetables

Remove store wrapping and trim or tear off bruised and discolored areas. Wash in cold water and drain. Place in plastic bag or plastic container and store in crisper.

Vegetables with skins (carrots, peppers)

Store in crisper, plastic bags, or plastic container.

Fruit

Wash, let dry, and store in refrigerator in plastic bags or crisper. Do not wash or hull berries until they are ready to use. Sort and keep berries in their original container in a crisper, or store in a loosely closed paper bag on a refrigerator shelf.

Eggs

Store without washing in egg bin provided (on some models), or in the original carton on an interior shelf.

Milk

Wipe milk cartons. For best storage, place milk on interior shelf.

Butter or margarine

Keep opened butter in covered dish or closed compartment. When storing an extra supply, wrap in freezer packaging and freeze.

Cheese

Store in the original wrapping until you are ready to use it. Once opened, rewrap tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil.

Leftovers

Cover leftovers with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Plastic containers with tight lids can also be used.

Meat

Store most meat in original wrapping as long as it is airtight and moisture-proof. Rewrap if necessary. See the following chart for storage times.

TYPEAPPROXIMATE TIME (DAYS)*
Chicken1 to 2
Ground beef1 to 2
Steaks and roasts3 to 5
Cured meats7 to 10
Bacon5 to 7
Cold cuts3 to 5
Variety meats1 to 2

* If storing meat longer than the times given, follow the directions for freezing.
NOTE: Use fresh fish and shellfish the same day as purchased.

Storing frozen food

The freezer section is designed for storage of commercially frozen food and for freezing food at home.

NOTE: For further information about preparing food for freezing or food storage times, contact your local Cooperative Extension Service or check a freezer guide or reliable cookbook.

Packaging

The secret to successful freezing is in the packaging. The way you close and seal the package must not allow air or moisture in or out. Packaging done in any other way could cause food odor and taste transfer throughout the refrigerator and drying of frozen food.

• Rigid plastic containers with tight-fitting lids
- Straight-sided canning/freezing jars
• Heavy-duty aluminum foil
- Plastic-coated paper
• Non-permeable plastic wraps (made from a saran film)

Follow package or container instructions for proper freezing methods.

Do not use:

  • Bread wrappers
    • Non-polyethylene plastic containers
  • Containers without tight lids
  • Waxed paper
  • Wax-coated freezer wrap
  • Thin, semi-permeable wrap

The use of these wrappings could cause food odor, taste transfer, and drying of frozen food.

Freezing

Do not expect your freezer to quick-freeze any large quantity of food. Put no more unfrozen food into the freezer than will freeze within 24 hours (no more than 2 to 3 pounds of food per cubic foot of freezer space). Leave enough space for air to circulate around packages. Be careful to leave enough room at the front so the door can close tightly.

Storage times will vary according to the quality of the food, the type of packaging or wrap used (airtight and moisture-proof), and the storage temperature, which should be 0^ F (-17.8°C).
