PREPARATION
The taste and texture of yogurt varies according to milk and yogurt starter culture selected.
Choosing the proper milk
Use the following qualities of milk which do not need boiling:
• Normal pasteurised milk
- Sterilised milk
- Long keeping UHT (Ultra High Temperature) sterilised milk
- Powdered milk
NOTE: Fresh milk must be boiled and, if necessary, filtered before use.
Choosing the proper starter culture
You will need a starter culture in order to make yogurt. A starter culture can be found in:
• A plain store-bought yogurt (preferably whole milk yogurt)
• A previously home-made yogurt
- A freeze-dried yogurt culture which can be purchased at pharmacies or health food stores. If using a freeze-dried yogurt culture add two hours to the yogurt making time.
NOTE: Do not use a batch of yogurt more than ten times for the starter culture as the results will diminish.
OPERATION
Make sure that the appliance is placed on a stable flat surface before use.
- Measure approximately 100 ml plain yogurt to use a starter culture and set aside in a small bowl.
- NOTE: If using a freeze-dried yogurt culture, refer to package directions for the proper amount of culture to use.
-
Blend 1 litre milk with the yogurt.
-
Fill each the cup 14 full with the yogurt/milk mixture. Leave each cup open, DO NOT place the lids on each cup.
-
Place the open cups into the yogurt maker.
-
Place the cover onto the yogurt maker.
-
Plug in and turn on the yogurt maker.
- The power indicator light will illuminate, indicating that the yogurt maker begins operating.
- It will take 8 to 15 hours to make yogurt.
- Do not move the yogurt maker during the yogurt making process.
- To find out if your yogurt is ready, after 8 hours, slightly jiggle one of the cups to see if it is firm. If it is, it is ready. You may want to let it go longer, up to 15 hours to increase the cultures in the yogurt.
-
When the yogurt is ready, turn off and unplug the appliance from the mains socket.
-
Water may condense on the cover of the yogurt maker. When you remove the cover, take care not to drip any accumulated water into the finished yogurt.
-
Cover each cup with the lids and chill them into the refrigerator for a minimum of two hours before eating.
DO NOT MOVE THE APPLIANCE OR REMOVE ANY CUP AS THIS WILL AFFECT THE FIRMNESS OF THE YOGURT.
