Frequently Asked Questions - E61442 IFM

How do I install the E61442 sensor?
Mount the sensor using the provided bracket. Ensure the detection zone is clear. Connect the M12 connector to a 10-30 V DC power supply. Adjust sensitivity via the potentiometer if needed.
What is the maximum sensing distance?
The maximum sensing distance is 10 meters for a standard reflector. The actual range depends on the target and environment.
Can I use the sensor in outdoor conditions?
Yes, the sensor has an IP67 rating, making it suitable for outdoor use. Avoid direct exposure to corrosive chemicals.
How do I troubleshoot if the sensor is not detecting?
Check the power supply (10-30 V DC), verify the output wiring (PNP/NPN), clean the lens, and ensure the target is within range. If using a reflector, align it properly.
What is the response time of the sensor?
The response time is less than 1 millisecond, suitable for high-speed applications.
How do I select between light-on and dark-on modes?
Some models have a selector switch or wiring option. Refer to the manual for your specific output configuration.
Is the sensor compatible with PLCs?
Yes, the PNP or NPN output can be directly connected to most PLC digital input modules.
What maintenance is required?
Periodically clean the optical surface with a soft, dry cloth. Check the cable and connector for damage. No internal maintenance is needed.
Can I replace the sensor cable?
The sensor has a fixed cable with an M12 connector. If damaged, replace the entire sensor or use a field-attachable connector.

Non-compliance may result in malfunction or interference.

3 Functions and features

The draw-wire mechanism is installed on an encoder. Via the wire travel, linear movement is converted into rotary movement. The unit is for example used for distance or displacement measurement and for position detection.

4 Installation

IFM E61442 - Installation - 1

This product is a precision measuring device. Therefore it has to be handled with care by trained staff. The following warnings apply to influences outside the limit values indicated in the product data sheet.

▶ Disconnect power.
▶ Ensure that the machine stands still.
▶ Do not start the drive during installation.

▶ Do not hit the shaft; do not use a file or similar tool on the shaft.

Damage to the encoder can be caused by:

  • too high forces on the shaft
  • humidity and chemical liquids (do not connect any cables oriented upwards)
    • extreme temperatures
    • too high vibrations and shocks
  • short circuit or too high an operating voltage
  • impact, shock or any other physical forces

CAUTION!

Non-intended use of the measuring wire may lead to injuries.

▶ Do not open the housing (prestressing of the measuring wire in the housing).
▶ Do not wrap the measuring wire around unprotected parts of bodies.
▶ Do not let the measuring wire snap or contract into the housing without control.
▶ Do not draw out the measuring wire beyond the maximum pull-out length.
▶ Protect the measuring wire against mechanical damage during mounting.
▶ Protect the wire fixture against unintentional release.

4.5 Wire guide

IFM E61442 - Wire guide - 1

Tensioned measuring wires may present a risk of injury to the operating personnel.

▶ Fix the measuring wire to the measured object.
▶ Wire fixture via ring, thread, eyelet or hook.
▶ Guide the measuring wire vertically.

For optimum wire guide, mount the wire fixture at the end of the measuring wire so that it can move freely.IFM E61442 - Wire guide - 2

4.6 Special mounting conditions

▶ If there is a risk of ice formation on the measuring wire, use an idler pulley to break the ice.IFM E61442 - Recommended mounting position - 1
▶ Ensure a straight pulling direction of the measuring wire. If necessary, use an idler pulley.IFM E61442 - Recommended mounting position - 2
▶ Do not mount the wire entry facing upwards in order to avoid ingress of water.IFM E61442 - Non recommended installation position - 1 IFM E61442 - Non recommended installation position - 2
