What is the advantage of a split keyboard?

A split keyboard allows you to position each half shoulder-width apart, reducing wrist strain and promoting a more natural typing posture. The Kinesis Freestyle Edge RGB further lets you adjust the splay angle and tenting for personalized ergonomics.

Can I program the keys without software?

Yes, you can program keys using onboard controls, but the full feature set (including macros, lighting, and remapping) is easier with Kinesis's SmartSet software, available for Windows and macOS.

Are the switches hot-swappable?

No, the switches are soldered to the PCB. However, you can order the keyboard with different Cherry MX switch options (e.g., Brown, Red, Blue) at purchase.

Does it have USB-C or Micro USB?

The keyboard uses USB 2.0 Type-A connectors for both halves. The detachable cable connects to each half via a proprietary port, and the main cable to the computer is USB-A.

What is the keycap material?

The keycaps are ABS plastic with laser-etched legends. They are standard OEM profile and compatible with most Cherry MX replacement keycap sets.

Can I adjust the RGB lighting per key?

Yes, using the SmartSet software you can customize RGB lighting per key, create layers, and sync effects. There are also predefined lighting modes accessible via onboard shortcuts.

Is this keyboard suitable for gaming?

Absolutely. It features full NKRO, fast mechanical switches, and programmable macros. The split design may take some adjustment, but many gamers find it reduces fatigue during long sessions.

How do I clean the keyboard?

Unplug the keyboard and remove keycaps for thorough cleaning. Use a compressed air duster for debris between switches. Wipe the surface with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid liquids near the electronics.

Can I use the two halves independently?

No, both halves must be connected to each other and to the computer via the included cables for the keyboard to function. There is no wireless mode.

What do I do if the wrist rests wear out?

Kinesis offers replacement wrist rests for the Freestyle Edge series. You can order them from the official website or authorized resellers. The wrist rests are attached via magnets for easy removal.

THE SMARTSET PROGRAMMING APP

The SmartSet App is unlike any other keyboard

Software. The App doesn't require any special drivers and it doesn't need to run in the

background or sync with the cloud.

Download the Windows or Mac version of the App

Locate the SmartGet App on your PC and double-click the icon to launch the App. The App will

lead the Active Profile for editing, but you can edit any Profile using the drop-down menu.

With the Freestyle and Breathe Effects, you can assign custom colors to each of the 95 keys.

Click the Save button to save your updated Profile to the v-Drive. You can use the App Refresh

GETTING STARTED

The Freestyle Edge RGB is 100% plug-and-play with all major operating systems and does not require the installation of any software or special drivers for basic keyboard use or onboard programming. Simply plug the Edge in to any full-size USB port on your computer. To customize Lighting Effects download the SmartSet App.

OVERVIEW

The Freestyle Edge RGB is a powerful programmable keyboard. The Edge can be programmed using a variety of convenient Onboard Shortcuts or via the SmartSet App. Please read this Quick Start Guide before attempting to configure the keyboard and refer to the full User Manual for detailed instructions regarding advanced features.

CHOOSE YOUR CONFIGURATION

There is no wrong way to set up the Edge. Experiment with different configurations to find the setup that works best for you. Try moving the right module out of the way for one-handed game-play or separating the modules to shoulder-width for a neutral typing posture. Or attach the Lift Kit (sold separately) to put your arms in a more relaxed position for maximum comfort. If you need extra separation, remove the cover on the back of the left module and extend the cable up to 20°. If the Link Cable develops a kink, simply pick up the left module and rotate it.

PROFILE MANAGEMENT

The Edge features 9 fully customizable Profiles which can be loaded on-the-fly (see pg. 4). The key layout of each Profile can be customized using the dedicated REMAP and MACRO onboard programming buttons or via the SmartSet Apps. Every key on the Edge can be reprogrammed and each key can be assigned a unique secondary action accessed via the "Fin" key. The Edge has 9 dedicated Game Keys for macros, but any non-modifier key can also trigger a macro. Up to 100 macros can be saved to each Profile.

Use the SmartSet App to customize the Lighting Effects for any of the nine Profiles. To turn off the backlighting, simply tap the LED key (see pg. 5).

ONBOARD PROGRAMMING

Use the SmartSet Key in combination with other keys to trigger Onboard Shortcuts which can be used to customize certain global keyboard settings.
