Instruction Sheet
Introduction
The Fluke BC7217 Battery Charger charges Fluke BP72XX series Nickel-Cadmium and Nickel-Metal-Hydride battery packs for handheld test tools. The BC7217 consists of a charger base and a power supply.
Connecting the Charger to Line Power
Model BC7217-120, Model BC7217-INTL
Connect the wall adapter to line power within the following range: 90 to 264V ac, 47 to 63 Hz. Plug the barrel connector into the charger dc input jack as shown in Figure 1.

Charging the Battery
Note
Sometimes a new battery needs several charge/discharge cycles before it performs to full capacity.
Before you use a new battery for the first time, charge it fully. Connect the charger to line power and place the battery in the charger as shown in Figure 2. You can leave the battery pack on trickle-charge indefinitely without damage. The charger will not overcharge a battery, even if you reinsert a charged battery.
- Nickel-Cadmium Battery
To obtain a full charge, charge the battery until the indicator blinks (approximately 1-1/2 hours).
• Nickel-Metal Hydride Battery
To obtain a full charge, charge the battery until the indicator blinks (approximately 2-1/2 hours), then leave it in the charger 3 more hours for a full charge.
Note
When you remove a charged battery from the charger, wait for the blinking indicator to go off before you insert a discharged battery. It takes about 2 seconds for the battery charger to reset.

When to Charge
Wait until the battery is fully discharged before you charge the battery. The battery will retain its charge longer.
Charge Mode Indicator
The red indicator light on the side of the charger shows the status of the battery charge cycle as follows:
- Off
The battery is not inserted, or it is inserted incorrectly, power is disconnected or not available, or the internal fuse is blown.
- Steady on
High-current fast charge mode.
- Blinking (50% duty cycle)
Nickel-Cadmium battery: trickle-charge mode.
Nickel-Metal Hydride battery: pulsed charge for the first 3 hours after blinking starts, then trickle-charge mode.
- Blinking (less than 50% duty cycle)
Pre-charge delay for proper battery temperature or voltage conditions.
Internal Fuse
An internal fuse is soldered in place. If the charger indicator does not go on when a battery is installed, this fuse may be blown. The fuse cannot be replaced by the user.
