Guidelines on Using a Voltmeter to Locate Power and Ground

  1. First set your voltmeter to the continuity setting (should beep when you touch the red and black probes together, telling you they are shorted).
  2. Find a ground on the car somewhere, like a bolt under the dash, or a metal cross member.
  3. Put the black probe on that ground, and touch the back of each exposed wire connector in the mirror harness with the red probe.
  4. For each wire that beeps, that means that wire is grounded. Turn the ignition to the on position, then back to off, and make sure it beeps regardless of the ignition position.
  5. Put the voltmeter into VDC mode, to measure DC volts, turn the ignition to the on position.
  6. Put the black probe on the ground wire found in #4.
  7. Touch each of the wires in that harness with the red probe, and note which one(s) gives you +12-14 volts, turn the ignition off to verify that the volt readings go down to zero or close to zero.
  8. That should define which two ports in that harness into which you would plug the MirrorTap, the black Prong into above, and the Red to #7.

RADAR DETECTOR POWER CORD WITH IN LINE FUSE

The MirrorTap Power Cord (MTPC) utilizes an in line fuse to help protect your radar detector and your vehicle's electrical system. You will need to identify the Ground wire and the +12 volt switched wire in your mirror's wire harness. This can be done by using a volt meter.

If you are unable to use a volt meter we recommend taking your vehicle to an auto stereo install shop.

You may also check www.mirrortap.com for additional information that may be available for your vehicle.

1 - Most auto dimming rear view mirrors have a molex plug supplying power to the mirror. Push the release tab down and pull the plug out of the mirror. You may have to wiggle the plug from side to side as you are pulling.

2 - IMPORTANT - Each wire enters the molex plug via a rectangular port as shown by the yellow arrows below. When inserting the MTPC prongs into the rectangular port of the molex plug, you will have to try inserting the MTPC prong in all four sides of the rectangular port to determine the best wedge fit. DO NOT use excessive force trying to insert the prongs.

3 - Insert the two prongs of the MTPC. The black prong wedges against what has been determined to be the ground wire. The red prong wedges against what has been determined to be the +12 volt switched wire.

4 - Secure the MTPC to the mirror's wire harness using the supplied cable tie. This will help prevent the MTPC from accidentally being pulled out of the plug.
