The Avedrag Dry Drag System

Avet Single and Two Speed reels feature space age carbon fiber drag plates. The carbon fiber drag plates are oversized (nearly the diameter of the spool), to provide the maximum surface area to provide a smooth, powerful drag with minimal heat buildup and near zero wear. The drag system is operated by a single adjustable lever for simple worry free operation. (see pg. 15 for use instructions)

All Avet Raptor models feature our patented DUAL DIRECT DRIVE Full Surface Caliper Brake System, capable of nearly twice the drag pressure of the standard Avets. The Raptors also feature our extremely smooth and consistent Dual Surface carbon fiber drag plate and dual precision machined stainless steel full surface caliper plates. (see pg. 13 for use instructions)

Egronomic Handle

All Avet Reels are equipped with precisely engineered ergonomic handles proportionately sized to each model to provide the optimum ratio of leverage, power and speed. Handle arms are precision machined and offset

5 FEATURES

closer to the center-line of the reel to reduce cranking wobble. The handles include a comfortable non-slip ergonomic grip with two ball bearings for smooth operation. Enhanced Power Handles are available for most models as an accessory. (see pg. 21 for ordering parts and accessories)

One Piece Rigid Frame

With the high output drag capabilities, and demanding durability required to land large aggressive saltwater fish, We had to engineer a frame that is up to the task. Avet Reel bodies are machined with extreme precision and close tolerances from a solid billet of 6061-T6 marine/aircraft grade aluminum. The one piece frame construction gives Avet reels an incredible strength to weight ratio to withstand twisting and torque under pressure.

Large Line Capacity Spool

Avet spools are machined from solid billet 6061-T6 stock with the same precision and quality as the Avet frame. The spools offer

FEATURES

6

extra large line capacities, while remaining lightweight for efficient casting. Avet spools ride on precision stainless steel ball bearings for incredible free-spool and ultra-smooth operation.

Stainless Steel Components

Avet Reels feature high quality stainless steel components, machined in house to our exacting quality standards, on the same precision machinery as our spools and frames.

Precision Machined Gears

All Avet Reel models contain special, high quality gears made of stainless steel. All gears are precision manufactured in our factory.

Stainless Steel Ball Bearings

All Avet Reels feature high quality rubber sealed stainless steel ball bearings for salt water resistance, smooth operation and superior free spooling.

⑦ FEATURES

Warning Clicker

All Avet Reels are equipped with a warning clicker, which when turned on, is a sound alarm when line is pulled from the reel. (see pg. 17 for use instructions).

Rod Mount and Rod Clamp

All Avet Reels come standard with a rod clamp. The clamp and mounting foot are designed to eliminate the need to disassemble the reel or empty to spool to install or remove. (see pg. 8 for use instructions). An optional narrow foot rod mount is available for use with small trigger seats for SX, MXJ and MXL models for an additional charge. (see pg. 21 for parts and accessory ordering info.)

Avet Lube and Grease

Avet Reels come with a small tube of Avet Lube. In addition, Avet Ultra Grease is available from your Avet dealer (or see pg.21 to order). Both are high quality specially formulated lubricants that provide extremely strong protection against wear and corrosion. This will help to keep your reels in good working condition all the time. (see pg. 18 for care and lubrication instructions.)

REEL SETUP

8

Mounting To Your Rod

SX, MX models: (See fig. A.) Slip the mounting foot (1) into the hood pockets on the reel seat on your rod and tighten the locking nuts securely. These smaller reels can be used with or without the clamp (2). If you have a trigger style seat, because of the ergonomic shape of the seat, you may not be able to use the clamp. Be sure the reel foot fits deep and securely into the rear pocket to avoid the possibility of the reel popping out under load. If it doesnt fit securely in the trigger seat, we offer a specially shaped foot designed specifically for trigger seats as an accessory at a reasonable price. (see pg. 21 for ordering info.) To mount the reel to a round body reel seat. or to a rod without a seat, place the reel onto the rod, align the clamp holes to the threaded holes under the reel and install the clamp screws (5). Use a small amount of grease or lube on the threads to prevent corrosion and allow easy removal.

JX through HX models: (See fig. B) Apply a small amount of lube or grease to the threads of the mounting studs (3), screw them into the threaded holes on bottom of the reel, and tighten securely with the supplied wrench (6). Install the reel onto the reelseat on the rod (or position the reel in place on the rod handle for seatless rods). Apply a small amount of grease or lube to the threads to prevent corrosion and allow

9 REEL SETUP

easy removal. Place the clamp (2) over the studs (3). Lightly grease the threads and shoulders of the shoulder nuts (4) and screw them on. Use the pronged end of the supplied wrench to securely tighten. We suggest removing the reel from aluminum reel seats and rinsing the reel, as well as the reel seat, with fresh water after each salt water use to avoid corrosion, and prevent the locknuts from seizing, making the reel difficult to remove. A light spray of lubricant to the aluminum reel seat and reel foot before each installation is recommended.

Spooling Line

There are many different types of fishing line available to anglers today ranging from nylon monofilament to super strong, ultra small diameter braided lines. Avet Reels are compatible with all of them!

Monofilament Line

Actual line capacity will vary depending on many factors such as brand, thickness, material, how tightly its packed, etc. Be sure the line goes on your reel spool in the same direction that it comes off of the bulk spool to prevent line twist. How you tie the line to the spool is a matter of personal preference, but be sure to tie it around the spool arbor tightly. Load the line under plenty of tension and pack the spool firm and level while winding. Fill the spool approximately 1/8" from the edge of the spool flange. For best performance keep your spool fully loaded. A full spool will make it easier and faster to recover line.

Braided Line

The super-braided lines with extremely small diameter for their strength will dramatically increase line capacities. This can be a big advantage to anglers targeting hard fighting, long running fish due to their extreme strength to diameter ratios, but some special precautions should be used.

11 REEL SETUP

Because of the strength of super-braid line (up to 4 times stronger than a comparable diameter monofilament line in some cases), use caution not to exceed your reel's drag capability. Super braids are an excellent choice to increase line capacity, but the reel's drag should be set within a reasonable range according to the line class of your Avet reel model. Special precautions should also be taken when loading braided line onto your Avet Reel. If you use gel-spun, or Spectra type braided line, make sure to back the line by winding a few layers of tape around the spool arbor. If you have your reel professionally spooled by your dealer, please specify that the braided line must be backed. Cloth surgeon's tape, tacky elastic finger tape, or double sided cloth hockey tape work the best. This will give the line something to dig into and grip, to prevent the line from slipping on the spool. It is also important to wind these types of lines as tightly as possible onto the spool, Braided line wound too loosely will bury into itself causing a jerky feel when pulled from the spool under drag pressure. Due to the volume of reels we see returned with slipping line, Avet will not be responsible for return shipping for reels returned specifically for warranty claims regarding faulty drags if we determine the line is slipping or burying, and the drag is determined to be functioning properly. The cost of return shipping will be the customers responsibility. Before returning a reel for drag service, please contact us by phone: (818) 576-9895 or toll free: (877) 487-4476.

Reel Operation

Avet SX 6/4 - Reel Operation - 1

Reel Operation

Your Avet Reel is designed to be simple and comfortable to use. It allows you to engage / disengage the free-spool and adjust the drag pressure in one smooth motion using a single lever design. All of the function controls are laid out for easy adjustment, allowing you to focus on fighting the fish, and not your reel!

The Drag Lever

As you move the drag lever back and forth, a series of firm detent "clicks" can be felt. Each detent position denotes a specific function or setting. (See fig.C, pg. 13)

SX - LX Models: With the lever all the way back to the free position the drag system is disengaged allowing the spool to free-spin for casting or dropping your lure or bait. Advancing the lever forward to the first detent lightly engages the drag to the bait setting, which is useful for allowing a live bait to swim, or letting line out while trolling without over-running the line on the spool. Advancing the lever forward to the next detent is the strike position. The strike position is where the drag system is fully engaged and pre-set to the drag pressure appropriate for the line class that you choose to use on the reel. (see: Pre-setting The Drag, pg. 14) Advancing the

13 Reel Operation

the lever past the strike position to the full position increases the drag to maximum pressure. Moving the lever back and forth from the bait position to the full position allows a finely variable drag, from light to heavy pressure.

HX and All Raptors
fig. C

HX and All Raptors SX - HX: The lever works the same way as all of the other Avets, with the addition of a ratcheting glide plate that the lever rides on, and the strike stop button located on the lever arm. The strike stop button stops the levers' advancement past the strike position to prevent accidental

movement to the full drag position. Simply press the button to move the lever foreward into the full drag position. The "bait" position is eliminated on these models.

Pre-setting the drag

The Avet lever drag system is designed to work by pre-setting the drag relative to the pound test (rated breaking strength) of the line you choose to use on the reel. The drag pre-set should be set so the drag slips at 25% to 30% of the lines rated strength when the lever is moved to the strike position. This setting builds in a good safety margin to allow for weak links in your line, like frays, nicks, knots, and overall line wear, as well as line drag created from friction as the line travels through the rod guides. With the lever backed off to the free position, use the drag pre-set knob (see fig. C-6), to adjust by turning it clockwise to increase pressure, and counter-clockwise to decrease it. Move the drag lever to the strike position and test the drag pressure by pulling line from the spool using a spring type, or digital fish scale. Back the lever off and adjust as necessary until the scale reads 25 - 30% of the line test (example: 20 lb. test = 5-6 lbs. of drag at strike). Always back the lever off to the free position when adjusting the pre-set knob. It is possible to damage the drag adjustment mechanism if the knob is adjusted without the lever backed off. Always pre-set your drag to the weakest section of line you will be using. If

15

Reel Operation

you are using a leader or top-shot that is weaker than your main line, set the drag to the leader or top-shot. The numbers engraved on the pre-set knob are for reference, and to indicate the direction to turn the knob to increase or decrease the drag. The numbers do not indicate actual pressure or line values.

Operating The Drag

Once the drag is pre-set, the reel is ready to fish. Back the lever off to the free position to cast or let out line. Once the line is out, advance the lever to the strike position to engage the drag. When a fish pulls line, drag can be increased or decreased while fighting the fish by simply moving the lever forward or backward. Advancing the lever past strike into the full position should be used as a reserve to apply more pressure to the fish as needed. As the line diameter on the spool gets smaller, the tension on the line increases, due to lack of radial leverage against a consistent drag pressure. and the lever should be backed off to decrease the line tension until you gain back more line. Because of the "set it and forget it" drag pre-set feature, no matter how much you adjust the drag with the lever, you will always be able to easily find the original safety zone that you pre-set in the strike position.

Shifting Gears (2-speed and Raptor models)

The simple, yet reliable shift system that Avet has built into the 2- speed models is so easy to operate, that it becomes second nature almost immediately. To shift from high gear to low gear, press the Low Gear Shift Button

Avet SX 6/4 - Shifting Gears (2-speed and Raptor models) - 1

text_image 1 2

fig. D

located on the center of the handle arm. (see fig. D-1) To shift to high gear, push the High Gear Shift Lever located next to the high gear button. (see fig. D-2) You can shift between gears even when you are cranking, and your hand never has to leave the handle. Avet's gear shifting mechanism is designed to operate with or without pressure so you can shift gears when there's a fish on. The gears will engage both when the handle is turned, or when a fish pulls line and rotates the spool. The Cast Control (M.C. Cast Models)

The M.C. Cast, or Magic Cast, is an adjustable magnetic anti-backlash cast control system using Avets patented Polar Amplification Technology to prevent line overrun and "birds nests" while casting. Unlike mechanical anti-back lash systems that add friction to the spool, the M.C. Cast system doesn't make contact with the spool at all, and only affects the spool when it spins at high speed, leaving the free-spool unaffected at low speed, it works by interrupting the magnetic field created by the spinning aluminum spool

17

Reel Operation

using an eddy current created by a powerful, patented, adjustable intensity magnet system. The M.C. Cast is the most reliable and consistent cast control available, making the Avet M.C. Reels the easiest reels to cast, even if

Avet SX 6/4 - Reel Operation - 1

text_image AVST PECOL-50 MC-Cad

fig. E

you have never cast a conventional style reel. Start with the M.C. Cast control adjustment knob (see: fig. E) turned to the maximum setting "5", While casting, hold the spool with your thumb, cast, and let it fly! While the lure is flying through the air, don't thumb the spinning spool, let the magnet do its work. Just before the lure hits the water, stop the spool with your thumb. Repeat, and gradually reduce the adjustment setting with each cast. Once you see loose line forming on the spool while its spinning, increase the setting by one number. Casting lighter weights will require higher settings, and heavier weights will use lower settings You will quickly develop a "feel" for which settings work best for your style of casting, the type of rod you are using, different weights, and casting into headwinds.

The Alarm Clicker

Your Avet Reel is equipped with a warning clicker. When engaged it serves as a sound alarm when line is pulled from the reel. It is designed to use only as a

Care And Lubrication

warning signal, and should be disengaged while retrieving or fighting a fish to prevent premature wear. The warning clicker is not designed to be used as a spool brake or anti-overrun device for kite fishing or other special techniques. Use the bait setting on the drag lever for these applications. Using the clicker for extended periods will wear it out prematurely or damage the clicker mechanism. Slide the clicker button down to engage the clicker alarm, and slide it up to disengage. (see: fig. E-1)

Care And Lubrication

Your Avet Reel is a precision machined instrument. For maximum durability, reasonable care must be given for ultimate performance of the reel. After each fishing trip the reel should be cleaned. Rinse the reel in fresh water to remove accumulated salt deposits. Dry excess moisture from the reel and sparingly lube exposed mechanisms using your included Avet Lube, or any high quality lube designed for saltwater application.(see: fig. F for lube points)

19 Servicing Your Avet Reel

You should use a high quality spray lubricant sprayed onto a rag to wipe down the outer surfaces of the reel to protect it and displace any moisture, and to help protect it the next time its used. Do not spray lubricant directly on the reel. Spray lube acts as a penetrating solvent and will dissolve and flush away the grease and lubricant vital to the working mechanisms. Your Avet Reel should be stored in a cool dry place. Do not store in a sealed plastic bag or airtight container, as the reel may develop condensation. Always be sure to store your reel with the lever drag in the free position to release pressure from various components of the reel. This will also allow the drag surfaces and internal parts to dry if they are wet. Periodically examine your reel for loose screws or fittings and take action if necessary. Your Avet Reel should be serviced at least once every season, more with heavy use.

Servicing Your Avet Reel

When it comes time for servicing, most Avet owners choose to send their reels to our factory to be worked on by our trained technicians. Internal servicing such as replacing worn parts, correct lubrication, inspection, etc. is best left in the hands of experts in servicing Avet Reels. Nobody knows your reel better than the people who designed and built it! With our factory service, we will replace any worn bearings, washers, or springs, clean and lube your reel, inspect and ship it back to you for a nominal fee of \$35.*

*Prices subject to change without notice, in accordance with the fluctuation of the economy.

Servicing Yor Avet Reel

20

For self-service, use the parts schematic included with your reel as a guide. Select a clean, quiet, well lit work area, and the proper tools. Organize the parts in the order in which you remove them, don't rely on just your memory. A digital camera can be an in-valuable tool as you tear down the reel. An old toothbrush, mineral spirits, denatured alcohol, or common dish soap and water are safe alternatives to clean and de-grease parts. When re-assembling the reel, lubricate the frictional surfaces of moving parts using a high quality waterproof grease and lube such as the Avet Ultra Grease and Avet Lube available from your Avet Dealer. Do not over-lubricate, as lube in the wrong places such as the drag surfaces can cause poor performance. Sparingly apply grease to high friction components like gear teeth, cam surfaces and clicker assembly. The spool bearings should be sparingly lubed with a high quality oil like the Avet Lube, with the excess blotted away to avoid flinging and contaminating the drag surfaces when the spool spins. The drag surfaces don't wear out on an Avet Reel, and only need replacing in extreme cases. If the drag feels less than perfect, a simple cleaning will refurbish it to like new performance. Remove the bearings from the spool, and run the spool and carbon drag surface under warm tap water. With a drop of dish soap and a tooth brush, vigorously scrub the carbon surface to remove any contaminants. Hold the spool under the warm running tap water and continue scrubbing

21 Order Parts And Accessories

until the foam dissapears and blot dry with a paper towel. Never attempt to remove the carbon drag from the spool (Raptor models are not attached). It can only be replaced in our factory using a specialized fixture to insure perfect trueness. When final assembling your Avet Reel, lubricating the screw threads and holes will make it easier to remove them for the next servicing, as well as insulating to prevent electrolysis and protect them from corrosion. Tighten screws securely with a correct fitting screwdriver, but don't over tighten. Regular servicing and keeping the reel well maintained will ensure a long life for your Avet Reel
